Born with a gift he didn't want, the ability to clearly recognize the half-breed angels and demons that walk the earth in human skin, Constantine (Reeves) was driven to take his own life to escape the tormenting clarity of his vision. But he failed. Resuscitated against his will, he found himself cast back into the land of the living. Now, marked as an attempted suicide with a temporary lease on life, he patrols the earthly border between heaven and hell, hoping in vain to earn his way to salvation by sending the devil's foot soldiers back to the depths. Everything you've ever done you've only ever done for yourself. I like it more than the score it deserves. It's tough to rank movies like this, that really aren't that good but that you wholeheartedly enjoy. That's why I still haven't ranked that snuff film I found at a garage sale. It was a blank vhs tape labeled only with a piece of tape across the front that read, "Tank Girl" and I never saw Lori Petty again.

Constantine cost us fifty cents to rent at Family Video. There were two copies available, both of them "full screen." About halfway through it, the DVD started skipping and then came to a stop. I opened the tray and discovered that the back of the disc was covered in sticky, greasy fingerprints. The same thing happened when we went back and rented the second copy. None of this has anything to do with the movie itself, but instead speaks to the type of person who would enjoy Constantine.

Ripe for cultural rediscovery, suffers from a grad film student’s amount of perception issues (Shia doesn’t help), but it’s a well-orchestrated comic-horror that also makes an excellent LA film, being about hidden demons and all. The religious thematics in it is… surprisingly decent? Lord help me. Came at the caboose of the Y2K End Times panic film bandwagon, but as long as Millennials still long for a swift and just death, this will continue to find its audience.

I've always liked this film much more than it really derserves. The plot, though intriguing, is thin and does not fulfil its potential. Weisz is uncharacteristically awful and Keanu is average at best, but his bland demeanor does seem to suit Constantine as a character. However visually this is a real treat, and it is all worth it for Peter Stormare's frankly legendary outing as the Devil in this film. Overall it's an entertaining couple of hours.

Ahead of its time in certain ways, Constantine pointed toward the rise of fantasy and horror entertainment in the years to follow. On its own, it has a lot of good ideas, striking imagery, and a lot of interesting execution, but Reeves' performance is a little samey in places, and Lebouf's presence is a mostly-inoffensive head-scratcher. Altogether, it's a film whose characters play backseat to its cinematography, and it could have been made noteworthy with some better performances.

Rachel Weisz is brilliant, as always. Keanu Reeves delivers solid performance as well. While the theme may be alienating to some - at least it was to me - the cinematography, music, background sound, special effects are more than good to keep one hooked up.

I've never read the source material "Hellblazer", still, back in 2005 its aesthetics made "Constantine" one hell of a visit to the cinema. Today, it demands a fitting home cinema equipment to take full effect. Luckily, the great visuals that are still amazing to watch a decade later are met with concise story-telling and a powerful cast. Too bad the planned sequel never came about!

Not terrible just terribly mediocre with literally nothing to differentiate it from the other pseudo horror/supernatural films Hollywood loves to put out. Too bad that this was based on some wonderful source material which they chose to ignore in favor of pushing out this mediocre pile. Keanu Reeves doubles as a mannequin as usual. There's some magic and demons or some such too.

This movie was lacking in so many ways. Rewatch: There's moments of promise that get lost in the middle. Way too long, too much exposition. I forgot Peter Stormare played the devil which is why I went back and he's criminally underused. So-so movie all around. Rewatch: the scenes in hell still rule, the exorcism to open is good and peter stormare is still good

When demons from hell wreak havoc on earth, who ya gonna call? John Constantine, an exorcist who's actually been to hell. After two hours of this laborious twaddle, I know how he must feel. Dreary, to put it mildly; elaborate special effects are no compensation.

Not without problems, but a good film nonetheless. Keanu is Keanu, as per usual, but this is the kind of movie that his "detached cool" vibe syncs with well. Shia shows up for the same reason he was in I, Robot (read: no reason), but the supporting cast beyond him is pretty impressive. Swinton is good, but Stormare's Satan is amazing -- easily my favourite film incarnation of Lucifer. The plot is weakened by its "stop the ticking clock!" device, but the effects and characters make up for it.

It seems to the script was written with laziness. The soundtrack is very bad, none causes feelings, the end is ridiculous. Poor acting of Keanu Reeves. It is of those movies that it has good special effects, however, you does not see the hour that finishes.

While taking massive liberties with the source material, Constantine has a lot to offer. Keanu Reeves, despite his limited emotional range, has more than what it takes to convingly portray a desperate, haunted man, cyncial and twisted. The movie's visual are stunning and inventive, there is able support from Tilda Swinton and Djimmon Honsou and Francis Lawrence makes a good impression as a director to keep an eye out for.

I liked some of it, but was indifferent through even more of it. I can see how "Constantine" might work as a dark graphic novel, but in translation to film, it fails to become Keanu's Matrix with demons. A tighter sequel could easily sway my thoughts, however.

Its suprisingly good movie. Famous music video maker F. Lawrence's first big movie and thats just a right genre for his skills. The acting is great (except pointless LeBeouf), background music nailed on, dialogs audio sometimes doesn't match the picture. Visual effect and camera work excellent. Worst thing - Christian criticer's who think this movie insults their belief and can't admit it out loud. Shame on them.

Think I understand now why Keanu Reeves said he would like a remake of this movie. It could have been much better. My main problem was with the unfolding of the story. The movie kept on spitting new information out of the blue, without a solid background. You'd think it's like one of the director's dreams, confusing and chaotic. The CGI is alright for 2005, but rough on the eyes in 2024.

If you're in the right mindset, Constantine can be fun. Keanu is good and gives his all to the role, which can be said for basically any movie he's in. The action is cartoonish and over-the-top, but never boring, and some of the campiness is pretty fun. When it tries to drift into spiritual themes and mythology territory, it gets murky, but the man vs demon battle scenes do pack a punch.

Hard to believe, but there was a time when "somber" and "haunting" were not dirty words for comic book movies. Beyond its tone - and the fact that nearly everyone delivers their lines in a dramatic stage whisper - CONSTANTINE doesn't capitalize enough on the compelling aspects of its hero's eternal torment. But who needs such things when you have a badass crucifix gun? A wonderfully devilish eleventh-hour cameo elevates it a bit.

Tries to hard to be edgy and cool, like calm down, you already have Keanu Reeves being a baddie (that listens to David Brubeck) and Tilda Swinton in being pure gender. The story feels like it could be better on the comics, i could tell it was based on one right away, those types of movies are hit or miss, this is kinda of a miss :/ although the cheesiness of some of the action scenes made it much more enjoyable (the cgi aged hilarious bad), those demons were straight out of an Iron maiden t-shir

Not wild about all the "sexy" tobacco promotion, but that's really the comic's fault. What's he gonna smoke, a joint? He doesn't seem like the rasta type, though that would be hilarious. Or cloves. He could smoke clove cigarillos. What a little hipster, Constantine! Maybe he should just constantly pop molly, but then we wouldn't have all the alluring, quasisatanic smoke eddying around him 24/7. Whatever. A little too Philip Morris & self consciously edgy, but used to be in my top 10.

Constantine is very interesting in fits and starts but pretty so-so in between. I think the biggest problem is the editing, which slows down the pace during a lot of the dialogue and the acting. I do like Keanu but during this period in his career no one had a clue how to use him properly and he sucks here. I also have to say the effects are great, in spite of their age.

Laboured action fantasy is chiefly a victim of the mid-aughts tendency to legitimise trivial subject matter by leaning in to the grim - this is a largely ugly, joyless affair further dragged down by a typically leaden Reeves performance (though he does acquit himself well in the action sequences). Strangely, the CGI evocation of hell is very well realised and, along with some luxuriously glossy cinematography, is the primary interest here. A fine cast is largely wasted.

This was a much better film than I was led to believe. It's a clever take on the neo-noir. Most noir ends with the mystery solved, but with nothing changed. The hero just knows more by the end. (spoiler) Instead, Constantine dies after solving the mystery but is prevented from going to heaven. He is forced to remain alive, unsure of his "goodness", while awaiting ultimate judgment. The devil saves him just so he'll have more time to tempt him. It's a very noir thing to do.

This is a movie that really isn't as bad as people make it out to be, and I thought that Keanu Reeves was, in actual fact, cast really well for the role. I thought that the way the movie was laid out was decent, and the story itself was cool, too, though there were some inconsistencies and plot holes. That plagues most movies though. Constantine was a film I had high hopes for. After the lacklustre second and third Matrix films I hoped this would be a bounce back to form for Keanu Reeves. Sadly though it's pretty underwhelming with brief moments of enjoyment. Tilda Swinton and Peter Stormare both give great performances but the same can't be said for Rachel Weisz. And although Keanu Reeves is as wooden as ever, he isn't necessarily the problem with this film. Ultimately this film just isn't as chilling as it should be.

Upsides: Nice to see Constantine portrayed. Some great drama, especially with the Lucifer character. Some bits echo sections from the actual graphic novel. Downsides: Some details involved little effort to reflect the original. Poor casting choice and not even a bottle of dye or wig... Constantine had red hair. Some daft bits, and the usual rejection of the darker elements in favour of nicer touchy-feely stuff: the rough edges of the character, the swearing, and basically, it's not Constantine.
