While it has the 3 B's any adventure movie should have (blood, boobs, bpunching animals in the face) the first Conan is not as much fun as I remembered. There are definite pacing issues, there wasn't thát much cool stuff happening and while Ahnuld looks the part he did not really impress as everyone's favorite Cimmerian. Some sets are cool and the score is classic, but the sum of its parts somehow falls short.

Once upon a time, in the land after the giants or something, there was a badass motherfuckin pimp named Conan. An evil man, named Shittyhair, killed the people in his village. Conan wants to kill that bastard. After the weirdest sex-scene ever, he meets an archer, named Moustache man. After some.. stuff he meets his main bitch in some town. Blablabla, etc etc. More stuff happens, and it ends with Conan pimpin another girl. That's about it. Quote of the movie: "UAHUAAAUAHAAHUAHA"

Close to expressing a similar thing to Howard but by different means. That being a glorified triumph of the Will but one in opposition to conformity & its societal & spiritual implications. Sprinkled with pulp & adolescent half-formed ideas but coherently mythicized with a purity & fervor of expression that's evident in its pathos-laden archetypes, weapon-fetishes, primal symbolism, sparse & weighted dialogue, romantic monumentalism & essentially a musical drive. Among my favourite film scores.

A lot of this is better than I expected, the fight scenes, the visual style, even the narrative, threadbare though it is. Much of that is counteracted by another thing I didn't expect, how incredibly boring and drawn out the majority of the film is. Endless establishing shots, speeches that despite being only 3 or 4 lines seem to drag on forever, and a lot of other drab filler.

Rewatched December 2015. The original sword and sorcery film, and still the best of its kind by far. Arnold's Conan is cunning and violent, yet childlike and sympathetic, meeting all manner of new experiences with curiosity and courage. Jones's imposing villain is full of wisdom as challenging as it is shamelessly cynical. No fantasy world has ever felt so authentic.

When you give Schwarzenegger the lead role, stick a weapon in his hand and give him virtually no dialogue whatsoever, you have succeeded as a filmmaker. It worked for Milius, it worked for Cameron, and it worked for McTiernan. Conan is a classic, well directed fantasy film with a great score and decent acting from James Earl Jones - not fantastic, but passable. Just avoid the atrocious sequel. Oh, and it's also the only film I can recall featuring a camel getting punched in the face.

Lumbering and ultimately monotonous sword and sandal epic is admittedly well-cast (who else but Schwarzenegger?) and is stunningly photographed, but it may have worked better if it had leaned more into camp absurdity than delving into the heavy-handed philosophising of Milius and Stone's screenplay; as always, Arnie acquits himself nicely in the action scenes but struggles when left to impart the ideological complexities of the screenplay.

To Milius' credit he takes the material very seriously & shoots things for maximum impact. The action scenes in particular capture the brutality & cheesecake sexuality of Howard's work & Frazetta's paintings. The problem is he goes overboard shooting a very simple story w/ very simple characters (& spotty acting) as if the material were drawn from War & Peace & not sword & sorcery shorts. The score helps a lot & the anti-hippie subtext is great but it's not enough to keep from Fast Forwarding.

Conan the Barbarian wasn't as barbaric as I was hoping it would be. Other than a few violent scenes, the film was pretty tame and at times numbingly boring. Two scenes that did stick out to me in particular as being good, were: The Giant Snake scene (I loved the special effects for that part, so gory!), and the attack on the Harem. I really liked the music throughout the film and some of the scenery was breathtaking which gave the movie a very epic feel, but as far as pure entertainment?...

What makes Conan great isn't just the fact that it's Arnold in his physical peak kicking ass it's that it captures the bleak dog eat dog mythic world of Robert E. Howard pretty well. Arnold also isn't trying to throw in too many tongue in cheek lines and plays this one close to the heart. The emotional payoff at the end is great and Thulsa Doom is one of the most memorable villains ever. The opening battle is the best i've seen in this type of film. The music kicks ass too.

The better production value and the odd moments of unexpected comedic brilliance - whether intentional or not - make Conan rise ever so slightly above the average level of quality of your everyday 80s sword and sorcery flicks. Nevertheless, one has to pose the question whether the better production value - which comes with stricter censorship for marketing and distribution reasons - actually hurts the film in hindsight. The main appeal of the sword and sorcery genre is its campiness, after all.

Conan The Barbarian is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's most iconic films. And although it hasn't aged particularly well it still has a strong cult following. I love Arnold and I grew up watching all of his films, but for whatever reason this was one of his few roles that did nothing for me. But that's not to say that there isn't any fun to be had here. The score is brilliant and Arnold is physically at his peak and has some hilariously quotable lines. But otherwise I think Conan is overrated.

It's Conan. You can probably already figure out if you're going to like it from that. Beyond everything that entails, it does feel a bit overlong, and the whole first hour could probably do with some trimming. But the sets and costumes are both impressive, and it's interesting to approach from the perspective of not being all factually true, being an after-the-facts record of events by Conan's personal biographer.

Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) seeks revenge on Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones), who murdered his family. A pretty simple story, but John Milius tells it quite well, evoking (in concert with some impressive design) a legendary time and mood--and a bloody one. Somehow, the mildly choppy storytelling only adds to this. Arnold is good (if a bit hammy) as the laconic Conan; Jones is a good campy villain; Sandahl Bergman is quite impressive as the Amazonian Valeria. Superior score by Basil Poledouris.

I didn't have much fun with Conan the Barbarian. The action scenes have no weight to them, the plot has far too much redundancies and tiresome moments, and Conan isn't all that interesting of a person. I wanted more of the world, and less of Arnold Schwarzenegger looking awkward on-screen. It seemed like a lot of poor choices were made in this production, ones that made it too long and boring to be worth a watch. Conan is once asked "what is best in life?" Well, Conan, it's not you.

It was a brilliant decision to take a movie with a lead actor who can't really deliver dialog and turn it into what amounts to a silent film. The music and visuals vastly outweigh the human speech here, and that's okay, because Milius builds tension and emotion just fine with those tools, and there is imagery here that will linger.

Something this earnestly goofy could never be made today. A lot of fun. One thing that really jumped out at me--perhaps just due to the relative lack of dialogue, but I think for other reasons as well, like the visual storytelling, is how much the cinematic language of this struck me as very silent film-like. It's very easy to imagine this as a silent film with a few title cards without it losing much at all (other than James Earl Jones' voice. RIP. ) The pacing is almost meditative.

There isn't much of a story which is a shame, because Conan seems like an interesting character on the surface. I really liked the first half hour when he was introduced. The movie got worse from that point unfortunately, but the villain and the final fight scene were still able to keep me entertained a bit. You could probably pick something better whether you are a fantasy or Schwarzenegger fan, so I can't really recommend it, but if you are curious, you won't have a very bad time.

Extremely well-crafted, with long dialogue-less periods in the first act that establish the feel of an oral story, an excellent score, gorgeous and impressively detailed sets, and just an overall strong sense of what it's trying to do. It is, however, a very straightforward version of a very traditionally masculine, very "teenage boys playing D&D" kind of plot, so if that's not your bag it's a bit emotionally thin.

I don't think Conan the Barbarian is very good. There is a certain element of cheese and ‘80s quality to it that keeps it fairly watchable, mostly due to Arnold Schwarzenegger's wooden performance and line deliveries. The music score and high production values are a plus, but that's about it. The story itself is not that compelling. There's a lot of meandering that slows the film down. The small handful of action sequences it has are some of the best scenes, but not enough to save it.

So much trudging, horseback riding, so much silence, as if this were the most portentous epic of all time, instead of a half-naked Conan beating people up. Some of the sets were pretty. The 1982 Conan the Barbarian is one of what might be described as the "pop culture epics" of the eighties, a decidedly cheesy and campy take on an epic mythology. After having seen this at a special cinema screening recently my appreciation for this sword and sorcery epic increased substantially. It is a pretty grim sort of story, but with just enough levity to make it very enertaining. The movie takes its time to portray certain aspects and it has several heavyweight actors like Jones and Sydow to lend credibility to the production, and the performances from Arnold, Bergman, Mako and Davidson makes this a highly entertaining adventure movie.

A friend of mine called this a "secret masterpiece," and that's not inaccurate. Historically, this seems to be classified as Schwarzenegger Schlock, despite it really being John Milius's tribute to his influences, particularly Kurosawa. The film is brought down by some questionable philosophy and unnecessary scenes, but the excellent score and impressively epic presentation render it, ultimately, a good film. I believe this deserves a reappraisal, or, at the very least, a reclassification.

'Barbarian' is an outrageously corny fantasy from the 1980s, yet the filmmakers present the tale dead-on. It's a fantasy made for young boys, albeit too violent and sexually explicit to be appropriate. Where does that leave this Schwarzenegger classic? It's a simplistic revenge tale full of some goofy scenes, but also some good ones too. The tone is problematic mostly because the film hasn't exactly aged well and is often more silly and lugheaded than dramatic fantasy-adventure.

I don't like Dark Age sword-swinging flicks, but when they're based on reality and have some historical value I give them some points for that.
