When Up Around the Bend started playing at the bonfire I realized movies are actually the best

Adored how this was shot. Great fluid camerawork that maintains a somber energy throughout. Avoids being melodramatic or over-conclusive, and ends up being a pretty heartbreaking snapshot of adolescence.

Nothing short of it's rebellious nature that becomes quite inviting to the outside, but just doesn't render as something I completely desired. There are some wonderfully captured moments to say the least.

A film about youth done in a poetic way that isn't a drag. That party scene especially when creedence starts playin is beautiful. Just a frantic showcase of rebellion.

Great stuff from Assayas as usual. Some of the best cinematography ever (the whole party sequence is, like, beyond amazing).

I felt like it started out stronger than it ended out feeling for me. It's got beautiful scenes, many of them relying on visuals and sounds instead of dialogue and it works for the movie. It's a very, very slow-moving thing, though, and if slow French dramas are not your thing, then this isn't going to be either. Loved those songs in the movie, though, they were soooo good.

Apparently roughly autobiographical, this film has the feeling of an authentic and lived experience, a nostalgia for a specific period in time (the soundtrack is prominent), and a romanticized vision of rebellious youth and young love. But where other filmmakers would paint this with rose-tinted aesthetic, Assayas employs an up-close, personal, somewhat gritty and harsh viscera.
