Predictably patchy series of conversational vignettes loosely related to coffee and cigarettes, which are directly discussed and/or consumed. As it progresses, you realise that most of the conversations are awkward, suggesting that miscommunication lies beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary exchanges. The segments with Pop and Waits and Molina and Coogan are amusing, but Jarmusch is digging deep with a toy shovel. It's just a hangout movie with his famous friends. That's it.

A collection of awkward moments played out perfectly by an awkward ensemble. Through the checkered tables that hide coffee stains and cigarette burns, we are treated with amazing black/white photography that is the norm for Jarmusch. I particularly enjoyed the Iggy/Waits bit. Mais je ne comprends pas pourquoi il utilise le francais toujours.

One for when you're in the mood for something light and whimsical. Is it simply pretentious, or an insightful look into the various ways we can (mis)communicate with each other? I have no idea, because all I can think of now is hanging out with slacker-alternate Cate Blanchett. Best line without a doubt: "Bill muthafuckin' Murray".

It's nice to watch something like this once in a while. Worth it for the viewing experience, and although I like the little experiment with linking a bunch of shorts over something quite universal, what you're inevitably left with is a see-sawing effect of stronger and weaker scenes.

I don't see why everbody thinks this is so brilliant. The atmosphere of the dialogues and the places are interesting and the different actors/musicians passing by keeps it amusing but for me it's just a way too pretentious movie

Very mixed bag. The highs are really good the lows are pretty terrible and the entire film has an air of pretension that makes hard to really enjoy. The Molina/Coogan section is worth it, a few of the others are as well.

Just a collection of scenes of people making small talk at cafes - hope i don't have to tell you that they're drinkin' coffee and smoking cigarettes - nothing important storywise, rather boring conversations, but good black&white cinematography, good acting and the pleasure of seeing two cate blanchetts chatting with each other. Worth one viewing.

Jarmusch is telling us some storys about life. Some are trivial, some more or less meaningless and some go deeper. But every story has their own lovely character. It's a silent and patient movie to enjoy. Just have a break and listen, that's something many people have forgotten. My favorite one is "Cousins" with Blanchet and the final one " chamapagne".

A neat, quite original film. Very relaxing, often humorous, only occasionally boring. Some of the segments aren't that great, though they do seem to get better toward the end. At its best, Coffee and Cigarettes manages to find poignancy in the seemingly trivial parts of life; at its worst it finds only trivialities.

As if Jarmusch took a long hard look in the mirror and asked „Jim, why do you make movies?“ „well, Jim, I guess just want to tell the world that I’m friends with some really famous musicians but no matter how often I terribly miscast them in my movies, I still don’t think everybody gets it!“ „Well, Jim, I just might have an idea…“

There's some good fun to be had catching the occasional recurring motifs, but the real gems lie in the chemistry between the participants, eg. Tom Waits being nasty to a very Iggy Pop. Some sequences work better than others and they're all so short that if one disappoints, another comes along soon.

Glad I waited to see this. Once you've been entranced by the rhythms of Jarmusch dialogue in his pair of epics (Dead Man and Ghost Dog), the promise of 90 minutes of nothing but Jarmusch dialogue goes from oddity to cinematic treat. If Malick etc are visual filmmakers then this is surely audio filmmaking: using words, sentences, and syllables to sketch out abstract feelings, ideas, and emotions.

The only thing that unifies the skits of Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes is that each one revolves around the characters having or talking about coffee and cigarettes. On its surface, that sounds quite boring, but Jarmusch actually works quite well with the premise. It's wonderfully awkward for most of the movie, especially the skit with Jack and Meg White. The skit with Steve Coogan and Alfred Molina was the best out of the bunch though.

I will say this: RZA/GZA/Bill Murray surpassed my already very high expectations ten times over. I mean, I knew it would be awesome, but I simply can't fathom how amazing that was. "You a bug, Bill Murray?" The way RZA says "Bill Murray" is just the best. BONG BONG. Iggy Pop/Tom Waits is excellent also and the rest have their moments, but could never truly capture my attention. Worst segment is "No Problems" by far.

I love Criticker, but how the hell did it recommend this as a tier 8/tier 9 film for me? I'm not even going to call it bad because... a film like this shouldn't have even been considered. Sheesh. Enjoyable, if a little hit and miss at times. Has some moments of real class, particuarly in the final few shorts. Overall Murray and Coogan stand out as the best performers simply because both excel in comic situations. The Coogan/Molina short was pure class also. It was so well written, with pitch perfect delivery and absurdly English, with the exception of "cell phone". No Englishman would bloody bloomin' blinkin' well say "cell phone".

Many in the motley cast play themselves, but not the Southern-accented Buscemi, and Blanchett plays not only herself but also, in a brunette wig, her look-alike lower-class cousin. The last-mentioned skit is a virtuoso acting display, and it vies with the Molina-Coogan duet as the best of the bunch. All of them, however, have their little drolleries -- very little and very few, yet just enough to fend off boredom.
