It is one of the most absurd mainstream animated films I've ever seen, and it is in no area afraid to stray away from taking the surrealism to its natural extreme. A film that can literally be enjoyed by anyone if they simply sit back, relax and go along for the ride, but the fact that the plot is generically predictable and offers no real punch at all beyond the great characterizations is a bit of a drawback. The sheer amount of hilarious jokes it throws at you makes it worth the watch.

What the hell? This was fantastic! I expected something good when I saw it was from the creators of Clone High, but it completely exceeded any expectations I had. The script was hilarious, it had one of the best voice casts of any animated film I've ever seen (and definitely the best all-celebrity voice cast) and it was full of brilliant, imaginative, impressive set-pieces involving food. Highly recommended.

one of the most enjoyable animated movies i've seen. it's extremely well written with lots of hilarious moments and surprisingly complex characters. the voice talent is also very impressive. bill hader and anna faris are awesome as the two leads and james caan makes you fall in love with flint's metaphor spouting father. the end of the film is filled with enough peril to keep both kids and adults entertained, and i loved how everything came full circle (even the shoes). don't miss this one.

The animation is fine but unimpressive. The humour raises some giggles but it all gets a bit one-note. Worth watching, though the story arc can't live up to those from Pixar or even Dreamworks'.

Clever at times and definitely a fun ride, although it does drag a bit towards the end. The plot is predictable to adults, but the kids it targets will enjoy the silliness and surreal premise. The film doesn't do much to challenge the genre, although I did enjoy the inversion of the "Hollywood Homely" female lead. The characters are memorable and endearing, and the story is charming in its simplicity.

A joke flies at you every few seconds. They certainly aren't all funny, but there's enough of so many types that you're bound to laugh at a good chunk of them (including somewhat meta-jokes about the genre as a whole). The story is as straight-forward as they come, but for a children's movie that's expected. The voice actors bring a lot to their roles, making jokes with their delivery alone from time-to-time.

Simple and fun, imaginative idea, lovely to look at, suitably-voiced and limited number of characters, plenty of decent jokes... I wish more animated features were like this. Would love to see it on an IMAX screen.

Poor narrative structure. All main plot points are revealed in first 20 minutes, after that it is just delayed formal expectations. Would have been much better as a short movie. CGI animation is mediocre for these times. Voice acting is decent enough. I am fan of the monkey, though. Kids, don't get fat and be yourself.

The "frustrated young adult failure with big dreams and a disapproving dad" opening act is generic, but sharp humour keeps it engaging (see Flint's "saying what I'm doing!") and a wild second half makes up for it, with its fantastically animated food action (see especially the meatball mission) and emotional climax (see dad, translated) as potent as the barrage of self-aware ("The disaster seems to be hitting all the major cities first") and wacky (see macaroni head) hilarity leading up to it.

Towards the end there are a few gags that are just so incredibly absurd, that you'd laugh out loud if you didn't feel so raped by the pace and stupidity of the story. In a world where more and more children seem to be suffering from ADHD this ain't helpin'.

A daffy premise exploited beautifully for both dramatic and comic effect, powered by a superb voice cast; much like in ELF, Caan swoops in and steals the film with his moving portrait of the disapproving father. Clever and witty screenplay actually builds and constructs gags with nary a scatological one in sight, matched by the well-crafted visual design, with a lot of great gags playing along in the background. "Action-packed" finale may be a little much, but it's a small price to pay.

I am usually more forgiving with kid's movies, but I barely need to with this one. It's refreshingly manic and original, fun for the family. I like the fact they are not afraid to put their character in silly situations, which is a change from Disney movies where only the annoying sidekick would do comedy, and the other characters would be stiff and sterile. Good cast, interesting designs, and the animation is dynamic and holds pretty well.

A genuinely funny comedy with a unique premise from the makers of the Lego Movie, with just enough emotional depth to work as great family film as well. Doesn't break any new ground but is silly, surreal, self-aware and imaginative and ultimately, a lot of fun. They really got a lot of good jokes out of the premise.

Cute enough. . , but Meatballs doesn't measure up to the Classics that Pixar has been pumping out for the past few years. I'd recommend waiting for DVD on this one, even if it does mean you won't be able to see its rather fabulous utilization of Real 3D. It's just not worth the price of admission and popcorn at the Big Screen.

I found it absolutely hilarious, with barely a dull moment. It's got a non-stop energy of joke after joke, really colorful and imaginative visuals, a touchingly emotional climax, and a subtle yet biting commentary on America's over-indulgence with food. Highly recommended for kids AND adults. By far, my favorite animated feature of '09.

This might be one of the best and most amusing animations I've seen. I really liked the story which is very original in my opinion. Other than that the characters are funny and deeper than in most animation flicks, the pacing in the film is wonderful and nice to follow(for children and adults) and actually this is just pure entertaining. I watched this for some more Lord/Miller comedy but this maybe wasn't quite as out-there as I expected. It was fun yeah but the sight gags and puns got old after a while, and I found the rest of the story to be kinda cookie-cutter (ha ha ha ha ha jokes). Not a bad way to spend an afternoon but just not as strong as their later works.

Mostly clever and consistently funny. I was surprised at the intelligence hiding behind the regressive-adult-children characters: one of the major dramatic sequences was set to The Alan Parsons Project, and the third act quickly turns into a riotous sendup of Mass Disaster films. And Bruce Campbell.

Cliched overall plot, but it's played out with a manically absurd sense of fun and great characters backed up by some solid voice acting. After ignoring it because it was a non-Pixar CGI movie I was really surprised at just how much I enjoyed it. For something that is proud to be mind-numbingly stupid, extremely absurd and in essence a slapstick food-fight from the heavens, I was disappointed to only get 3 or so laughs out of it. The zaniness suffers from some poor pacing and a couple of moments where it attempts to shoot off some morals (beauty, brains, father-son relationships etc.) to poor effect. Sticking with giant meatballs, spaghetti sauce and a steady stream of humour would've helped this film to a much higher rating.

Decent enough kids & grown-ups animation laudable for an abundance of creativity in the visual department, and a "more is more" attitude to gag-making. The overall story and character arcs, however, are pretty bog-standard template stuff, which is all you'd expect from a children's book really. As an adult you wish for a bit more depth or complexity sometimes. Then again, seeing a giant donut land on someone's head is all you need sometimes to make you guffaw.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting. It's extremely well written; although the plot is predictable, the jokes aren't (and they're hilarious.) Its suffers slightly from trying to have a message, but this was a delight, with a great voice cast and inspired use of the visuals, both in sight gags and the strange images using food motifs. Its probably one of the most visually original works from mainstream American animation in a while. As it continues on, its gets weirder and weirder, climaxing in one of the most inspired and weird final acts I've seen in a while, both hilarious and perversely disturbing in some of its images.

Quirky and fun characters, with a dark undertone that doesn't crowd out whacky antics. But the writers seem to lose their way halfway through. Characterisation of the main character is sacrificed for laughs making him seem psychopathic in the face of a world-ending tragedy which he is responsible for. The 'don't be afraid to be smart' moral seems half hearted, something decided by committee and only adhered to with disappointed reluctance. Overall disappointing despite good aspects.
