Closer to the Moon

This is a crazy "True life" story which is really had to be told. I adored the tone and the style of the movie and how it handled such a heavyhanded material with a lighthearted but serious (very, very difficult to pull off) humor. The acting is brilliant, particularly Fermiga, who with Strong carried the movie amazingly. I wish it was shot in Romanian, as there were some awkward accent choices to represent Romanian accents (like Irish accent for workers).

A distinguished group of freedom fighters were valiant during the war but are systematically excluded from their peacetime livelihoods because of their Jewish heritage. The movie chronicles their last stand against the injustices of the Romanian political establishment. There were several surprises & turns of events. Mark Strong & Vera Fermiga were marvelous. The rather expected ending comes all too soon. Some wonderful comedic moments are mixed into this otherwise rather unhappy true story.

Nae Caranfil's oeuvre is not my cup of tea, his style of humor makes me cringe, honestly. Too bad, since this movie had the luminous Vera Farmiga and the cool Mark Strong in the cast. I don't know? Is it that the American producers fucked up his cut? Maybe. But this amazing real-life story didn't need to be told in such a convoluted, soulless, excess-laden way.
