Keeps the stakes compellingly high for the protagonist w/out ever needing to engage in the kind of gritty horror stories that ex-addicts like Jerry Stahl or the film Requiem for a Dream made famous. It's no didactic Lifetime movie either as Keaton's lead is always a selfish jerk even when he stops using. It results in a film that never feels anything less than real and representative of what life must be like for the average addict and it's only further elevated by the performances

One of the foremost assets the eternally underrated Michael Keaton anchors in this gritty character study is his rowdy, hectic energy, which makes his character feel less like a casualty than like a wreck happening to itself. Bolstered by first-rate supporting performances, he makes this everyday story into an individual's, and a very involving one.

Michael Keaton turns in a good performance, but the movie itself is flawed. There really isn't anyone to root for and you mostly want to see Keaton get his comeuppance throughout the movie. By the end, an unnecessary tragedy turns this into just another "message" movie.
