This amazing movie takes my breath away. A coming-of-age story, ambitiously raveled into numerous other plot strands, together forming a raw portrayal of crime and corruption in the favelas and of the inhabitants' dreams of power, escape, love etc. It's masterfully told and feels very authentic, yet all the while showcasing groundbreaking stylistic tricks. 'City of God' is my favorite movie of all time.

Shockingly disturbing story about gang violence in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Drugs and violence rule in a lawless community controlled by ruthless murderers and drug dealers. The innocent are drawn in as surely as the guilty, and the body counts forever rises. Ignorance, police corruption and extreme poverty creates an endless cycle of violence and death. The story is tragic and desperate. I would have liked it to have been dubbed in English as reading the subtitles distracts from the movie.

(2nd viewing) An elusive but mind grabbing docudrama, City of God is one the best foreign language films I've seen. From the editing to the acting to its overwhelming take on storytelling (using narration and flashbacks, my favorite ways of telling a story), everything about it is razor sharp. You should also check out the making of, a look at how unprofessional and unknown actors were able to breath so much life into their characters. A peerless masterpiece, essential viewing !!!

Interesting story of boys growing up in the slumps of Rio, one becoming a big gangster and the other trying to stay away from it. Also interesting extra's on the DVD about the drug-war between the police and the gangsters.

How this was made on a six million dollar budget will never cease to amaze me. City of God is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen, with fantastic cinematography, beautiful color coordination and stunning camerawork. The fact that this was completely snubbed at the Academy Awards astounds me; City of God was not only the best movie of 2002 but it probably the best movie of the 00's. In a few decades, it's more than possible that this movie will be seen as a classic.

An impeccably made film with a mind-numbing, frenetic take on the brutality and lawlessness of a Brazilian slum area. What it lacks in emotional heft (the viewer is constantly held at arm's length from the characters perhaps to lessen the horror) it makes up for in its stunning cinematography and flawless and always compelling narrative that never lets up. An extraordinary achievement.

So densely creative, rich with detailed characters and beautifully made that it's actually startling when a closing credit asserts that it is based on a true story. Meirelles and Lund depict the turf wars of the Brazilian underworld with a dynamic visual sense that never overwhelms the storytelling. Indeed, it's enhanced by these techniques in much the same way that Martin Scorsese's visual reveries make the likes of Mean Streets and Goodfellas more vivid and more grounded in equal measure.

Intense, humorous, creative, and very, very entertaining. It's one of the most unique movies I've ever seen - despite the nature of the subject matter, Meirelles treats his story with an audacious playfulness, intertwining a countless number of seperate storylines that all tie together, often looping back on the same stories through flashbacks and different points of view (one hold-up of a crackhouse is shown, in a very short window, three times). Very loose and quick despite the subject matter.

City of God is a masterpiece of cinema. The vivid colour and character of a Brazilian slum provides a unique film setting and the opportunity is not missed. The cinematography is intense with close up freeze frames and angles which make you feel like you are caught in the middle of the frenetic action. The plot is also deeply engaging and horrifying at the same time focusing both on the culture of disturbingly violent youth crime alongside positive ambition and dreams of escape.

This is another "growing up gangster" film (complete with the sociopath who seems made to run the slums and the levelheaded kid who dreams of making it out), but in a new cultural context. The pace was excellent, and it's so dense that it felt Bigger than the 2 hour movie that it is (in a good way). It's like a mini-epic.

While undoubtedly entertaining, well-acted, and colorful, City of God is really quite ridiculous. It's playful to a fault. Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, no doubt a very memorable one, but I thought it would have benefited from a slightly more serious tone. ...which would then make it a completely different movie, I guess.

A tremendous film based on true stories about youths growing up in dangerous Rio de Janeiro neighborhoods. Some fall victim to the violence and drug culture while others look for any way to escape it. Our lead, Rocket, finds peace through the lens of a camera, becoming a freelance photographer. The acting is superb and the camera work is some of the greatest of the 21st century. With great influences over camera angles and film-styling, its a bench-mark film both emotionally and technically.

Excellent movie, in nearly all aspects. Loved the authenticity of the actors used, it pulls you into the world in a way that a Hollywood movie never could. The actors themselves are truly top notch, especially same of the gangster leads, Leandro Firmino especially. The cinematography is a little erratic, there is a bit too much shaky-cam/jumps in some areas, but it's absolutely beautiful in other places. And though it jumps timelines a bit, the plot is structured very completely, and with style.

It's the production that really makes this film what it is: a symphony of a city God has overlooked, with any traces of light dying or being diverted through frantic, fragmented shots of always ugly chaos no matter what color feelings they're behind. It's easy to get swept away in this maelstrom, and with your focus always being shifted you can't make any sense of it either. You're just watching the storm play out. True, colorful film making evolves City of God's familiar story and characters.

A tense, taut and visually extravagant tour in the slums of Rio De Janeiro. Meirelles' visual style is occasionally too flashy, but his camerawork is undeniably impressive as is the sharp editing. That results in a thoroughly engrossing picture that manages to shock and provoke, despite never resorting to preaching. However, the relatively dispassionate approach to the characters, although it prevents manipulation, somewhat limits the overall emotional impact of an otherwise excellent film.
