This early classic of Golden Age Shanghai cinema echoes Visconti's classic La Terra Trema in its beautifully rendered story of a humble silk-farming family struggling to be free of debt to exploitative middlemen.

I really enjoyed the first part and the parts with the silkworms was actually kind of fascinating but I had a hard time staying engaged during the rest of the film.

One of those late Chinese silents that definitely are interesting. Story of silk-farmers and the struggle on the lower end of the trade. Sometimes a tragic drama, other times almost a documentary of silk and silkworms. For me this didn't live up to the potential of it sometimes showed. There are quality scenes in there and it is a cool curio from the Far East, but the pacing and the story was lacking to get emotionally captivated.
