This movie portrays the drug scene in Berlin in the 70s, following tape recordings of Christiane F. 14 years old Christiane lives with her mother and little sister in a typical multi-storey apartment building in Berlin. She's fascinated by the 'Sound', a new disco with most modern equipment. Although she's legally too young, she asks a friend to take her. There she meets Detlef, who's in a clique where everybody's on drugs. Step by step she gets drawn deeper into the scene. (imdb)

You know what you're going into with a movie like this, the point of which it is to teach and thereby prevent. Or you think you know. It comes as no surprise, of course, that it's dark and often depressing; anything less would defeat the purpose. But Uli Edel's film amounts to more than education only, featuring wonderfully natural performances and fitting stylistic choices. Most importantly, it seems very real.

Unflinching anti-drug film about a pretty 14 year old girl's descent into self-destruction that is never for a moment preachy or moralizing, very raw and harrowing especially the painful "cold turkey" scene. It is also beautifully filmed - a kind of dreamy artful teen angst later popularized by directors such as Lukas Moodysson and Sofia Coppola.

A harrowing masterpiece of realist and social-realist filmmaking.

Like a more pensive Requiem for a Dream, Edel turns what could've been some great and poetic shit (the film has its touching moments, where Edel relatively patient and attentive capture the characters' sullen facial expressions, silently looking at each other with a certain sad devotion, or the protagonist in insisting, solitary close-ups) into something close to propaganda.

Affecting drug story. Incredible performances are offered by these young actors in challenging roles. The cinematography, music and editing are all wonderful, often coming together to actually feel like drugs.

The story of a girl who lives in Berlin and starts going to the disco with the "sexy" girl classmate. She falls in love with one of the boys of her company. She starts taking trips. And then her boyfriend starts doing H so she starts also herself. She doesn't understand her addiction and eventually it's very difficult for her to quit. Many of her friends die from OD. In the end she takes a big dose but she survives and her mum takes her to leave with her aunts in Hamburg.

I've seen two masterpieces of cinema. This is one. It's hard to describe perfection and I kinda don't even want to try, but you know it when you see it and it changes your life.

Visceral social-realism that's engaging, captivating and effective. With an aversion to syringes, this really hit me, but due to its aesthetic and narrative qualities, watching it was a weird pleasure.

Chilling portrayal of an absolutely gorgeous 14 year old girl as she slowly transforms into a heroin addict. Her infatuation with a handsome young boy, and her curiosity about drugs, leads her to try pills and eventually to become a heroin addict. We watch as her morals are slowly degraded and she is working the streets to support her habit. I liked it, although I dislike the handling of the ending, which was quite abrupt. It's as if they ran out of money to finish the movie.
