I dunno, there something about Rudolph... there's love in his films, a tenderness.

a film noir that doesn't have the energy to get off the couch and engage with the world. There's a stiffness and formality in the dialogue that's at odds with Rudolph's interest in the twisty hold sexual attraction has on people. It doesn't have a strong enough pulse to portray obsession. Contrived terseness is the overwhelming tone of the film. It needs heat. It has murmured discussions of heat instead.

The premise is novel, but the movie does EVERYTHING else wrong. The acting is so wooden that I can see why all five leads had stunted careers. The direction is utterly artless; the red motif and the Francophilia motif are so sloppily applied, distributed as haphazardly as the shots that go for actual artistic interest, and the music cued at such odd times that this feels exactly like a telefilm with intermittent swearing. Lantana has a similar premise with a MUCH better execution.

Liked the 80s vibe in this.

An eccentric, sometimes erotic, always perceptive adult comedy. A unique, dreamy meditation on sexual longings.

Our Daily Free Stream: Alan Rudolph - Choose Me.

If Hal Hartley directed a cheesy '80s version of My Blueberry Nights and had Paul Thomas Anderson do the camerawork (Boogie Nights copies the opening shot almost exactly), it would probably turn out a lot like this. Maybe not quite as great as that sounds (to me anyway), but close enough...

This was an immensely engaging film although the dialogue seemed laboured at times. I had issues with some of the acting. I thought Warren was overmatched, but Bujold made up for it. I still don't know whether to blame the script or the direction, though.

The music is oh, so very, eighties.

And we wonder where the term toxic masculinity came from? This is a trash movie. It’s like watching a serial killer fall in love with every woman he sees. I just didn’t get what there is to this.

while the film doesn't really aspire to present all varieties of *lovers* in this story, there is a specific focus on finding some kind of warmth- and in that regard, rudolph's quirky approach to romance finds a balance because everything we watch is essentially 5 people trying to understand one another and fail miserably. i have a soft spot for rudolph's goofiness but this is a genuine if meandering romance film and I'm all for it.

Warren is the highlight here so would've preferred that the entire movie was about her instead of having Bujold's character be part of the narrative as well.
