From his early silent works, the great Russian film director, Herr Yakov Protazanov, made literary adaptations from equally great Russian writers, as is the case with "Chiny I Lyudi" ( Ranks And People ) (1929) in which three short stories by Chekhov, "Anna On The Neck", "Death Of A Petty Official" and "Chameleon" were assembled for the silent screen.

Yakov Protazanov directs 3 amusing short stories by Anton Chekhov with the common theme of the absurdities of power. The first story is the best, and also the longest lasting 40 of the 65 minutes Ranks And People lasts. The other two stories are not that interesting apart from the conclusions and some minor directing techniques. But overall this is another example of Protazanov being one of the most interesting Russian directors of the silent era.
