The last of the OG slasher villains to come out of the 80's wasn't another silent-stalking masked killer, or some kind of demon, but instead a killer toy. Brad Dourif and co. turned "Chucky" into a horror icon, and the last of the 80's slashers to launch a franchise of sequels and merchandise...that is of course, not counting the "Puppet Master"(1989-) franchise, I guess...although they're kind of the "Ghoulies"(1985) to "Chucky's" "Gremlins"(1984) really, so...I think the point still stands.

Not too bad. It's a silly premise, but some of it is legitimately chilling and really well directed so I'm not at all surprised people were afraid of this upon initial release. Hicks is excellent and Dourif is having a really fun time. It's somewhat exaggerated, and the way they explain how Charles gets into the doll feels pretty tacked on. Still, it's a pretty fun movie and light years better than I thought it'd be.

I went in with damn low expectations, so maybe that helped. All in all, I thought this was a more than passable, campy thriller. It's silly but that's okay! It adds to the atmosphere. Probably won't like it as this series moves on, but hey it's worth a shot.

Chucky can take as much abuse as Rasputin, with approximately the same amount of bullshit mysticism. I'd like to see Brad Dourif advise Tsar Nicolas on important issues of the state.

Holds up surprisingly well, though very stupid and silly in parts (as one would expect from a movie about a doll infused with a killer's soul via voodoo magicz.) Animatronics are off the fucking chain. Weird how they were never replicated as well when the technology improved. Fuck everything about Alex Vincent though. He makes me hate child actors even more than I already do. Which is A LOT.

I miss the era where a serial killer could transfer his soul into a doll thanks to magic, and the film doesn't try to explain it with some real world nonsense. You're either on board with a murderous evil doll, or you are not. This film hit gold with getting Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky, and Wikipedia tells me Jessica Walter was actually the voice for previews. This feels incredibly strange to me.

The makers of Child's Play simply don't have enough fun with the killer-doll concept; Chucky commits only three murders throughout the film and the violence is woefully tame in each instance. Dourif's snarling vocals and a competent child performance do give it a lift, but it's a monument of missed potential, especially given what other horror movies were getting away with at the time.

A big downfall here is that at least half the movie is spent in tedious scenes of people trying to explain to someone that YES the doll REALLY IS alive, and REALLY IS killing people, and NO I'm not crazy. It happens all too often in horror movies of this nature, and it just feels like something that HAS to be in the movie, even though nobody likes it. How much shorter would this movie be if each new person didn't require 10+ minutes of convincing?

Deliciously demented piece of 80s horror strikes out in its own direction from Freddy and Jason to great effect, in large part due to its presentation of Chucky as a plausibly terrifying character via some excellent special effects (backed by a convincing performance from young Vincent). Familiar situations and scenarios are given strength and conviction thanks to generally fine performances all round.

Look, I don't exactly take to this like a corpulent person with a risk of heart disease would take to a bacon-laced breakfast - the it's bad for me but still good approach - nevertheless I do have a slight rose-tinted ritualistic spell cast on my glasses and can still chuckle at Chucky.

Apparently, Chucky being alive is supposed to be a twist. We're supposed to think Andy is the killer. Huh. That aside, the movie holds up delightfully; the special effects work, Dourif's performance is far more lifelike once he turns into a doll, and my only real complaint is that you have Chris Sarandon as a cop and you don't include a single "fence" pun.

Effective little horror-thriller that is cleverer than it seems. It's an unabashed genre piece with a sly sense of humour about itself that never crosses the line into outright mockery. It also merges a consumerist critique with an old fashioned, almost fable like, sense of morality, but with an incredibly dark twist. The animatronics are stellar and Dourif's voice work is peerless in the genre. Chucky is a wickedly inventive character, but unfortunately this is his only really good film.

Painfully bad horror flick that's not even worth watching for how terrible it is. Child's Play is among the most annoying and stupid of monster/slasher/horror films, but it is hard to forget Chucky, the murderous toy boy who just won't stay dead, or crushed, or melted, or whatever. This film requires pretty extreme suspension of disbelief to say the least. Crap!

Not brilliant or anything like that -- comedy material doesn't quite land for me --, but gotta give credit to everything related to visual effects and puppeteering. Kept imagining how cool this would've been if directed by someone like Dante or Verhoeven. Anyways, Holland's approach is effective, and that was largely sufficient to spawn a franchise. Favorite parts: Chucky being dismembered and yet refusing to die in the end; bits where the kid is kinda taking the blame for Chucky's crimes.

Same problem I had with Holland's debut (Fright Night), which is that the characters spend way too long spinning their wheels in the "why isn't anyone believing me?" phase. But I can see why Chucky became an iconic character, the animatronic doll was surprisingly expressive and Brad Dourif was a great get for the voice.

As far as "evil doll/toy attack" movie go, it was not too bad. Silly, but not too bad. The puppet had its moments, the kid was not bad for a kid actor so young. The kills and settings were different and colourful. It has to be taken with humour, of course

It's an 80s movie. An 80s horror no less. You don't take these seriously, that's half the fun. And as such, its a fun cheesy ride. It's not Bergman but it's not trying to be. You can pop this one on in the background or drinking beer with your buddies. It's a guilty chocolate bar that is half melted you find under the car seat that you forgot about from weeks ago. It's a freaking doll that comes to life to murder people, what else do you want lol. Suspend all disbelief and enjoy.

Somehow a killer doll brought to live by voodoo magic isn't direct to vhs b-movie crap. Child's Play is a lighthearted silly slasher that surprisingly holds up. Brad Dourif does a great killer voice and the special effects on the doll's movements still hold up today. Most of the adult actors are phoning it in, but somehow the child actor is believable? It's crazy that this all worked.

So absurd that it's verging on being quite good. Alex Vincent performs admirably, considering his age and the fact he has to act within certain elements associated with this film. Must complement the film on being able to extract some genuine horror out of such a premise. As a whole though this film is not a great example of horror. it seems unsure wherever it wants to go full blown parody or serious horror and falls awkwardly beetween the two, its biggest flaw.

This definitely doesn't hold up in terms of creepy dolls that will give you nightmares, but it's actually a novel concept explored well. The plot beats themselves can be a bit threadbare, yet as the film fought tooth and nail for my attention, I became increasingly impressed by the slew of effects used to create Chucky. Much that those *do* hold up, and there is still genuine tension in a handful of scenes.

The demonic sprit of a desperate convict is transplanted into a lovable doll toy which then targets young Andy (Alex Vincent) in order to take over his body, but nobody believes the child when strange murders start to take place around him. Solid chiller from director Tom Holland ("Fright Night") features good performances from Catherine Hicks as the boy's mother and Chris Sarandon as the police detective who reluctantly helps her look into the situation. Numerous sequels followed.

I can't exactly pinpoint where it goes wrong, it balances the tone between the absurdity of the premise and the darkness of the genre more deftly than you'd expect and the acting is passable, but it seems all that does it bring it up from cheesy camp to to a mundane attempt at horror with rather bad plotting and a memorable premise.
