Child's Play

James Mason is fantastic as is most of the cast, but c'mon guys, Beau Bridges is no Chucky. He's barely a Richard Thomas.

James Mason is extraordinary here, moving his character from an icy ogre to a desperate collection of hurts and grievances. The film around him is OK until the thuddingly heavy-handed final 10 minutes or so. Beau Bridges seems a bit lost, while Lumet directs with an expressionist bent that sometimes goes overboard on the gargoylish close-ups of sweat-speckled faces.

What moves this film is really James Mason, but it is a difficult movie to watch.
