Ruka is a young girl whose parents are separated and whose father works in an aquarium. When two boys, Umi and Sora, who were raised in the sea by dugongs, are brought to the aquarium, Ruka feels drawn to them and begins to realize that she has the same sort of supernatural connection to the ocean that they do. However, the exact nature of the boys' power and of the abnormal events is unknown, and Ruka gets drawn into investigating the mystery that surrounds her new friends. (manga)

Maybe it made more sense in Igarashi's manga, but the story is here just pseudo-intellectual nonsense. Studio 4°C has always had a strange and unique style. Here we have breathtaking 2D images, partly sketchy, images visually based on traditional animation, extremely reduced pictures and also CGI rendering all mixed together. That would make a nice little psychedelic dream-like movie if there weren't moving 3D objects placed in a 2D environment that would tear you out all the time.

Children of the Sea takes a big swing and misses just by a small fraction. While the surreal elements are breathtakingly beautiful and profound, the realistic aspects used to tether the fever dream sequences to some form reality fell short. Blown away by the final act but the first two acts feel like a slog. Happy I watched it to the end.

Beautiful all the way, with just the nice amount of surreal philosophical musings in the end.
