The story is simple, two young boys are usurped from being the head of their gang of children by the son of the man who indicts their father on charges of embezzlement (him being fired and arrested for this.) They're sent to live with their uncle and spend their time thinking of ways to escape back home. Father is found innocent, and they live happily ever after. (imdb)

There isn't anything overwhelmingly exciting going on in this film -- a love-hate relationship between brothers, back and forth bullying with other kids, a loving but confused relationship with the family patriarch. Shimizu has us consider childhood as seen through the eyes of Sampei, a little troublemaker who makes life a little more difficult for everyone he encounters, but ultimately we see he's not a bad seed, just a kid being a kid.

It's a charming little film about childhood and the children's lives are extremely well observed presented in a manner I found natural and somewhat spontaneous. Many of the things the kids get up to put a smile on my face and there are plenty of moments that reminded me of being a kid. Still I don't like it nearly as much as I'd like to. I can't quite get my head round why I didn't like it more.

I just love how director Hiroshi Shimizu creates this kids world! Every scene is filled with curiosity two times over! It's so incredible heart warming. Not to mention filled with laughs.... and a few tears. And the kids in this are amazing! The story might seem simplistic, even some of the technical portions are less then perfect, but this hits bullseye as far as children's point of view! This is a true gem from the world of cinema!

Slice of life drama filled with solid performances even from the kids. Some humorous moments kept this from becoming too melodramatic. I'm really liking Hiroshi Shimizu as a director.

Quite powerful how it’s able to truly tap into its characters POV’s how we experience all these BIG MOMENTS as small because a child doesn’t grasp the drastic nature of what is occurring. Sad but heartwarming movie
