A dispossessed, violent man who's life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Successively deprived of parents and homes and with few other ties, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation. (imdb)

A whole lot of screaming and growling and running through the woods.

Watched a son of the soil do things to a corpse for like 50 minutes wondering what went wrong with my Saturday night.

I thought Franco showed promise previously, but he is ill-prepared to pull this off. Perhaps there's a director out there that could pull off McCarthy's novel but this is a rambling, gross, boring mess. I don't know who this Scott Haze is but he's clearly not ready for Lester Ballard, gibbering nonsense through an absurd set of false teeth and failing to make him viscerally believable. I really hope Franco leaves "Blood Meridian" alone because I don't know if my heart can take it.

Franco's just doing these movies to annoy people at this point, isn't he? Does he actually think he's got a shot at making utterly unfilmable books like this and AS I LAY DYING into watchable films? Like, he thinks HE'S honestly the one who can crack the code? Actually WATCHING Ballard hump a corpse--instead of imagining it--only amps up the bad taste and makes the story look flat-out silly in retrospect. I'd tell Franco to lay off, but he won't. He's probably gonna do ULYSSES next.

It's not really entertaining as it is a little uncomfortable because unless you're like me and hump corpses all day, then it's pretty hard to watch. Mostly we watch Ballad run through the woods with a gun, mumble incoherent sentences, occasionally murder someone and have sex with said corpses. It's pretty good at hitting a Southern Gothic feel, but it isn't the most thrilling watch. This works better in novel format, I believe.

The dirt and atmosphere of a life of a drifter, child of God, was well achieved. The mystic story was also nicely build but the whole thing kind of led nowhere. He did not build anything out of ordinary from genre in the end.

You ever see No Country for Old Men? Where a deranged killer goes on a rampage and kills and kills and you just can't stop watching? Well that's a Cormac McCarthy novel, and another is this Child of God. Similar sort of thing. Great script, great acting, and... kinda hard to watch! My roommate had to leave. The sheriff was wonderfully played by Tim Blake Nelson, the killer, again wonderfully, by Scott Haze. Sort of a horror movie where all the monsters are people

Urgh, such a mess. I don't know what the idea was with the book quotes, but you can't just take those and slap them in between the scenes and go "see, I made art". Scott Haze was pretty damn amazing, though, and hadn't it been for his acting chops in this movie, this would have been far worse. Otherwise it just feels kind of... fake? Overdone? There's so much you can capture with the concept of Appalachian mood, put it on film and make it visceral, but I got none of that here.
