Chelsea on the Rocks

Like Mulberry Street, it favours anecdote over analysis, but at least the anecdotes are lively and the 'characters' are colourful and we get some sense of the significance of the place for NY's artistic life, despite the reanactments resembling bad community theater and Ferrara's tendency to just accept the hotel's importance as a given. Viewed in the broader context of urban gentrification, Chelsea's fate is a troubling but predictable sign of neo-liberalism's corrosive effect on culture.

Back when there were artists they lived at the Chelsea, and now even the ghosts are forced to move out.
