The big screen debut of the now iconic comedy duo "Cheech and Chong" is the original stoner movie. Although the film feels more like a disjointed series of events rather than a cohesive story that's okay man. Instead the film is driven largely by the duos chemistry playing out like a loosely connected remix of some of their best bits and a lot of improve to fill in the gaps. Don't freak out, spark up and mellow out, but be careful. This is some heavy duty shit.

Up In Smoke has the rather dubious distinction of being the grandaddy of stoner comedies, a disreputable sub-genre not readily associated with talent, but it is endearing precisely because of Cheech and Chong's magnetic chemistry, Adler's laid back direction, the humourous performance by Keach as Sgt.Stedenko and the unnasuming way it captures the spirit of its time. Even when the jokes fizzle, it's full of fascinating incidental period detail about the drug and music cultures of the 1970's.

Two irresponsible 30-somethings embark on impromptu road-trip to escape their families, only one of them is a dead-weight kid and the other is a deadbeat dad. The utter lack of plot pretension or geographic destination renders it a hotbox of authenticity - not in that the situations themselves are believable but more that the thread between them is so go-with-the-flow and 'whatever happens happens' that it feels akin to how an actual drug-enthusiasts' weekend might progress - uncalculated, free.

It was impossible to ascertain whether the movie had any kind of plot to it from the back of the DVD box, and it turned out that was because there wasn't one really. Felt like someone started writing a script, got twenty minutes in, took some acid, and then left the rest of it to a monkey with a typewriter.

It’s surprisingly fairly funny. It’s kinda lame about women in a few places if I recall, but not awful. The story moves along at a good pace. The writing is often quite witty. Def watch with friends or why bother?

The first half which includes the scene where they smoke dog shit is good. The other half is just dog shit. Don't jump to any conclusions about how you feel about these guys based on what you think about this one. Next Movie (1980) Is in another league entirely. Same with Things Are Tough All Over (1982). Nice Dreams (1981) is also better, although its humor is closer to this than the other two which are absolute master pieces.

As an everyday smoker myself, although I don't relate much to the bumbling stoner archetype, I really should've seen this years ago. It's pretty good, and was obviously written by legit stoners as opposed to some suit trying to imagine what the drug addled brain undergoes. It's an enjoyable romp, with Keach being a highlight.

While this probably works best when watching with a group of friends, I still had a good time and thought this held up surprisingly well. The dynamic between the leads works very well and you can see how they could built a career out of it.

The scenarios that Cheech and Chong maneuver throughout these hilarious 90 minutes are so absurdly funny that you just can't not have a good time!

Up in Smoke is a great movie. It isn't my favorite Cheech and Chong movie but it's probably my second favorite. It's a warm blanket. The stars of this movie are funny and relatable. The cop who chases after them the whole movie is a drag but he's a really good drag. Tom Skerrett's character is hilarious and I wanted more of him. Zane Buzby is probably my favorite character in the hole movie. She brings the hippy girl from the Muppets to life in this role. Every time she was on screen I laughed.

Up In Smoke is a bunch of boring, incoherent nonsense. Several times the flimsy "story" simply skips ahead, leaving you wondering if you missed something. One moment they're in court, the next they're at someone's home in a band they apparently joined. Most of the "jokes" revolve around someone getting high, which always instantly makes people mellow and hungry. A man gets high and in the next shot he buys a bunch of burgers. Haha. The only amusement came from the weird Dutch translation.

Effectively displays the good, the bad and the embarrassing elements of generic stoner-flicks. For the most part, it's either wacky & funny or sad & funny.

Probably unfair to rate this seeing as I was so loaded when I watched it I appear to have watched an entirely different movie akin to something by Stan Brakhage, but as it stands this movie isn't particularly funny, and much of it makes me feel rather embarrassed for stoners, many of whom can be very funny people. Cheech Marin has unfortunately done worse.

Were it not for stoner culture, there's no way this movie would be as popular as it is. Bad script, bad acting, bad singing, and stupid slapstick comedy and sex jokes. I thought this movie was hilarious when I was 12. I think that's the kind of mentality you have to have to enjoy it.
