The plot to Charlie Countryman is a tad surreal and over-dramatic, but the film compensates with a fever-dream tone and Moby-infused soundtrack, that I found surprisingly engaging. LaBeouf is a strong enough lead to carry the film; Wood was a little suspect with her accent, though she won me over by the end; but it was Buckley and Grint who stole every scene they were in. This film is more of a visceral experience rather than one that is intricately plotted, often seeming a little ridiculous.

Its emotional energy is infectious. The story is clumsy and the love interest is nothing more than the term implies, but the energetic direction never has to struggle to carry me along with LaBeouf as he sprints through the city to an evocative soundtrack.

Feels consciously striving towards gathering a cult following. When it isn't focused on a nonsensical forced love story, the rapid fire comic action is almost entertaining. Charlie Countryman is the cinematic equivalent of a patchwork quilt made by an autistic teenager on acid.

After a pretty engaging, unpredictable first half hour, it devolves into one of those overly precious, self-indulgent love-amongst-the-ruins frolics that I tend to hate. Characters start behaving erratically, we're never sure how reliable the narrative is, and the movie pours on the quirkiness until we find ourselves mentally checking out because why bother. A shame, because it wastes an interesting locale and some strong performances.

Decent ideas devolve quickly into hipster-friendly cutesey-ness. Imagine Everything is Illuminated with the sentimentality knobs turned up to maximum but without the charismatic leads. It's an exercise in othering another culture but one that is palatable to leftist orthodoxy. It's an indie pop record that's designed to smother you in the saccharine frailty of "life," that happens to be plastic and contrived. It's a poor man's Amelie that drowned in its own whimsy.

A mans mother dies and he finds himself at a new point in his life where he needs to dive headfirst into the unknown to regain happiness. This need for adventure puts him in the country of Romania and Shia does an amazing job here. I have not been a fan his acting in the past, but this is a new Shia, one I am happy to see more of in the future. The movie may get nonsensical at points, but I feel it only works with the narrative more as life itself has a habit of not making sense.

This is a Fight Club and Eternal Sunshine inspired film that doesn't even come close to the potency of either. The love story, in the end, doesn't really feel realistic. And I think it's because of LaBeouf. He somehow finds a way to make acting that is designed to be overly realistic (stumbling lines, etc.) and makes it seem very manufactured and muddy. Schweiger plays his party adequately. Wood is adequate, probably best actor, but LaBeouf's a serious weakness in film.

An appealing blend of coming-of-age philosophising and fun gangster-y goings-on. Shia LaBeouf delivers a solid lead performance and holds together a broadly entertaining, if tonally inconsistent, movie.

Charlie doesn't run as much as Lola, but its pretty close. Still, him running allows our ears a rest as he isn't talking. Cocky, erratic LaBeouf is the most annoying part of the film that is otherwise a mess of attempts at comedy and a very forced love story.

The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman. His death might be necessary by watching it most certainly isn't. Ba-dum-tish! In all seriousness, this is a tonally inconsistent, shallow film about less than it wants. It has good actors playing terribly uninteresting and inconsequential characters doing little that matters for a plot that should take about 30 minutes to play out, not 110. It has a good look and uses its exotic location well, but this movie isn't worth seeing.

A Romanian romance for the ages. Well, let's not go that far, but Charlie Countryman was an interesting romance film set in an interesting location. This film has one of the most peculiar starts that almost borders on science fiction...

Romeo + Juliet meets True Romance in a violent love story that is way too strained for it's own good. Shia LaBeouf is ace.

A wonderfully unrestrained film which seems to tell its story with no regard for anything but itself. I really liked that. It gets fairly cliché and pompous in parts (the narration towards the end was very nearly cringe-worthy), but this is one extremely solid, exciting and entertaining film about love. Great style, great music, great cast. Loved it despite a few flaws.
