Charlie Chan in City in Darkness

Wholly convoluted mystery plot benefits from a great setting-- Paris on the eve of the second world war-- and a nasty set of villains. Mind you, much of it relies on about a dozen different people showing up to a man's house within an hour of each other to rob it, but it works out well enough. Good work by Harold Huber as a proto-Clouseau.

Sidney Toler's 4th film as Charlie Chan, but this felt a lot more like a Harold Huber movie all broad, loud and stupid as the European Police Inspector with Chan only tagging along as his sidekick giving the vital clues. Has it's moments, but it's never an essential Chan mystery. Most interesting about this film was the feel of war coming just around the corner.
