takes the cop from CURE out into the forest for an eco-political parable somewhere between tarkovsky, teshigahara and miyazaki. KK is THE modern master of the haunted image, but here they're rather poisoned, the symbolic inhabitants moving with or against their currents of decay. he doesn't align with a particular ideology but suggests they're all built on false dichotomies and collective hubris, and his final note anticipates PULSE with its desire to hit the reset button before it's too late.

Estreava há 25 anos no Festival de Toronto. Li um texto comentando a ecocritica aqui que era bem presente no cinema japonês dos anos 90 (o mais importante do período foi o Mononoke), mas isso nem de longe explica bem esse filme, pois ele é uma dessas alegorias cebola com várias camadas de interpretação, se é possível seria um tipo de elo perdido filosófico entre Godard e Tarkovski, talvez por isso mesmo o filme mais intelectualmente estimulante do diretor, numa carreira de grandes estímulos.

A beautifully enigmatic movie - at first the themes seem quite clear, but as it spirals off into different directions I don’t know what the fuck - with fantastic Tarkovsky vibes and beautiful visuals. Is it a hot take to prefer this to Cure or Pulse? It was so good.

One of those movies where nothing can be taken at face value. It's actually pretty damn boring, but I like the ideas on the individual and society.
