Champagne Waltz

1937
Comedy
Another of Paramount's efforts to transform Metropolitan Opera diva Gladys Swarthout into a popular movie star, Champagne Waltz casts Swarthout as Elsa Strauss, the daughter of a celebrated Viennese composer (Fritz Leiber). American bandleader Buzzy Bellew (Fred MacMurray) and his aggregation invade Vienna with their own special repertoire of melodies, and before long the Austrian capital has abandoned waltzes in favor of jazz. On the soprano bandwagon came Gladys Swarthout as Paramount's version of Jeanette MacDonald. I found her quite good. The screen presence was there, looking beautiful and full of energy. Fred MacMurray delivered easily my favourite bit when he was introduced to a one hell of a jazzed up Hold That Tiger! Things drop a little after that, but they maintain a decent tone through out. Not a big flop entertainment wise even if the it was lukewarm at the box office.
