Cesare deve morire

2012
1h 17m
The performance of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar comes to an end and the performers are rewarded with rapturous applause. The lights go out; the actors leave the stage and return to their cells. They are all inmates of the Roman maximum security prison Rebibbia. One of them comments: 'Ever since I discovered art this cell has truly become a prison'. (mubi.com)

I'm just a sucker for grainy black and white and scenes involving coffee makers.

It looks more poignant and powerful when the Tavianis stick to the dramatic feeling of these prisioners not as confident, sometimes solid actors -- the guy who plays Brutus is just amazing --, but as simple men who find freedom of mind through embracing their roles. Still, they are convicts, they know it, but the directors choose to depict their condition in terms of stage performance. Also, it feels like this could've been a bit longer -- actually, I think the editing is really unsatisfying.

To me both the most purely satisfying and complex movie experience of 2012 - and rarely has the 'you've never seen anything like this!'-cliche felt more fitting. Equally beautiful to watch and inspiring to experience, the Taviani brothers succeed in showcasing human beings instead of convicted demons - without sympathizing with their bad deeds, as illustrated perfectly in the last line: "Ever since I became acquainted with art my cell turned into a prison".

The photography, music and acting are the true highlights in this original take on Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar".

Filmin oyuncu kadrosunun tamamı hapishanede kalan gerçek mahkûmlar. Film sahneleri de mahkûmların Shakespeare’in Jül Sezar adlı tiyatro oyununu sergilemek için yaptıkları provalardan oluşmakta.

This is mostly driven by the force of compelling performances. The whole idea is easily related back to Peter Brook's Marat/Sade, but the biographical component lends it another dimension. Fantastic.
