Superficial but decent entertainment for the 'it's sunday night and I haven't got anything better planned and oh god what am I doing with my life' kind of viewer. Which is me! Until people find a way to make CGI blood not look fake, it should be banned from films.

A hidden gem amongst the mediocrity of medieval knight type films. It has everything, insane villainesses, backstabbing, superb photography and great acting. I later discovered the dudes who do the Thrones battles worked on this and it fucking tells. The narration isn't needed which is the only fault I can find. Splendid. Worth a rewatch or three..

Story is generally uncomfortable because the sequence of events goes from bad to worse. Initially the Romans are the good guys, but as the movie progresses that is clearly not the case. We are meant to take individual merit on board, more than anything. As Imogen Poots is introduced, the cloud of depression is briefly lifted from the movie, but make no mistake this movie is grim. Quite a bit of gore, and the fights are decent.

One of the things I'm most proud of in Scottish history is that the Romans gave up and built a big wall because we were too mental for them. Well made film, with one surprising stand out. Imogen Poots does a fantastic accent, I'd have thought she was from around here. Sad I couldn't work on this because of my day job (and I'm probably not the right build)

Maybe it's because I'm Norse that I had no idea who to root for. Beardy McNulty? The tongue lacking Russian supermodel with blue war paint? Ulrich Thomsen's Asterix? Fassbender and his merry men, who are supposedly the best he's ever been to war with, even though they get their asses handed to them, every time there's a scrap? No excessive violence in the world can remedy this conundrum. But it helps a little.

Exists on historically sketchy territory but this film works as a strange Roman Dirty Dozen/Great Escape. The action is decent with realistic gore scenes but the CGI bloodwork looks terrible. The setting is beautiful and Olga Kurylenko is convincing as the femme fatale in this. Just about anything is watchable with Fassbender and Dominic West involved as well. It follows very typical action set pieces but does it with enthusiasm. It's another entertaining albeit simple film by Neil Marshall.

Why the hate? 'Aint nothing wrong with this movie. The acting is quite good, mostly because Michael Fassbender is quite good. The scenery is gorgeous, but not in a romantic way like in...say Braveheart. It's cold and off-putting, just as it should be. The violence is good, the action is good, I mean, it's a solid movie. And it's addressing a complex period in Roman history, where the Empire stopped expanding and began to dig in. For a mainstream movie it actually has some depth.

When an entire Roman legion is destroyed by the Picts, a small handful of surviving soldiers are forced to try and escape from deep within enemy territory. This is basically Apocalypto set in Ancient Britain, one long chase scene that leads sequentially from one bloody fight to the next. The story and acting are pretty one dimensional and straight forward, but there's TONS of CGI gore and limbs and heads flying everywhere. The tacked on love story sucks.

Not my taste. Way too bloody and not in a fun way. Not funny at any point actually. Action scenes have been seen before and the plot is very predictable. Good production value though. I would compare this movie to King Arthur. Don't know which is worst. If you are looking for a Neil Marshall pic, it's the Descent you want.

Competently directed action-thriller with a slight breath of fresh air. Though Centurion doesn't offer anything new it's Roman-times settings gives it the ability to slightly tread new ground. David Morrissey is a capable lead and though the supporting cast aren't really given all that much character to flesh out none of them really feel like throw-aways. Solid recommendation but certainly nothing great.

A Roman column is lured into a trap and butchered by an attacking horde. A few soldiers are lucky to escape with their lives. They try to save their commander but are forced to flee in order to save their own lives. Treachery and danger awaits them around every corner and even from within their own ranks. After a bitter struggle to survive, the sole survivor is nearly killed by his own army in a politically motivated attempt to hide the truth of the debacle. A violent and tragic story.

Gash. CGI blood (not particularly realistic or stylish CGI blood either) overdrive, hammy acting but a total lack of fun, and poor editing (with a few moments of quality). The story is lopsided, ends abruptly, and spends little time giving depth to the characters - and any time spent on that pursuit feels wasted. Could have been a fun Romaxploitation (yeah I know sorry) film with a great cast but instead it's a tacky and humorless slog with a good cast utterly wasted. Just don't bother.

There were points were it was a fun watch, but the majority of the film is a chase sequence revolving around indistinguishable characters that I cared so very little about. The action scenes are not good enough to save the uninteresting plot, because they riddled with noticeable CGI blood and the fact that it's hard to tell if the characters you're watching fight are ones you've even seen before. Another blood and sandals action film filled with excessive and hyperstylized violence. That doesn't bother me, nor does the familiar "hunter becomes the hunted" premise - it's a cliched but tried and true concept that works for mindless action films. The film's biggest problems are its endlessly cynical attitude and its inability to develop any sort of dramatic tension. Every gruesome death and hideous wound (all shot in loving and explicit detail) is empty spectacle without consequence.

Standard and straight ahead. Much like "District 9", any allegories about imperialists fighting an amorphous and invisible enemy evaporate to accommodate more grisly mayhem. Every time forces engage the film almost never runs at sound speed--one fight a quarter of the way in, where our Roman heroes are ambushed, has blithering montages of close combat done in shaky-cam and under-cranking are cross-cut with super slow motion of men riding horses.

Centurion is not a terribly complex film. The few survivors of an annihilation obviously inspired the Tuetoburg ambush, flee fugitive style with a small squad of elites on their heels. Marshall remains a competent action director and packs the film with enough violence to fulfill the attention span of most teens, but never rises to the levels of tense horror achieved by The Descent or frenetic mayhem of Doomsday.

This is another clunker with a bunch of bright spots, but it messes up by not having enough West and of course there's the embarassing Mary Sue character, guaranteed to be fap fodder for sad, cellardwelling WoW-gamers until the inevitable Bayonetta-film comes around and gives them something else to smack their puds around to.
