Has the first documented movie jump scare - a dubious legacy to say the least. The filmmakers' less-is-more approach (dictated more by budget than style) didn't really work for me - when you spend the whole movie teasing an appearance by a transformed cat woman and (spoiler alert) you only get about 30 seconds of a panther at the end, you can't help but feel a little cheated. Overall fine but overrated.

"Cat People! Cat People! Stalk like cats, Talk like people. Cat People! Cat People!" The first, and maybe most noteworthy, of the Val Lewton/RKO horror B-movies to come out of the 40's was this atmospheric, little psychological suspense thriller. While never actually horrific, especially by modern standards, the brilliant use of cinematography and shadows throughout helps create a building sense of dread around our tragic love story. Certainly still worth checking out for classic genre fans.

If nothing else, wonderfully atmospheric. That "chase" scene at night, with Jane Randolph (who rocks the hell out of a one-piece later on) looking over her shoulder to the dark street behind her, is killer. Tourneur deftly avoids the limits of the era and manages to imply instead of show; this movie hides its monster longer than just about any other. Its relationships aren't terribly convincing, but oh well.

It's a B-movie premise treated with A-movie taste, Jacques Tourneur letting suggestion and imagination fulfill the film's inherent curiosities with noir atmospherics. How many great set pieces are there in this movie? Probably a metaphor for American xenophobia, wherein Simone Simon's spiritual crisis is thought to be nothing more than silly foreign superstition, until it's too late.

Fantastic, understated horror. Loved the difference between the psychiatrist and Irena, the former believing she has a problem with the mind, the latter a problem with her soul. This places the film in direct contradiction to a modern materialist mindset. The photography is stunning, with the swimming pool scene being a special standout of how shadow can be used to great effect. An excellent film all around.

The guide for every low-budget suspense and horror film to come after. It's aged poorly in some respects (and I find it hard to believe the relationships weren't kinda ridiculous even at the time it came out), but when it gets good, it gets good. The suspense scenes are memorable, and the lighting in particular is wonderfully atmospheric throughout.

This is a mildly suspenseful dark tragedy, if not really horror. The poor foreign girl has a cat curse and a terrible husband. I guess she was better off not marrying the random stranger from her littering-spree at the zoo after all. In all it might have been an effective social or relational allegory if the relationship weren't given the Hollywood treatment. The visuals are great, though, and it has a few nice scenes.

An example of what great film-making can do: Tourneur elevates a stupid premise and shoe-string budget into a creepy and atmospheric psychological thriller. It's a great film to study how editing and lighting and camerawork can effectively create tension and fear, and the two chase scenes are among the best I've ever seen. While not the greatest film from it's era. it's certainly not bad by any means and it's hard not to at least appreciate the craftsmanship.

Very dated. The acting isn't always the best (that Serbian accent, oof), the story is a little strange and, despite the myth, unrealistic. I mean, falling in love with someone you barely know within a day? Spoiler: no wonder the marriage failed. Nice kittens/cats in this movie though.

Peculiar little film that has a unique atmosphere and an unassuming demeanor that belies its psycho-sexual complexity (for its time). By today's standards it's rather tame, and while its understated menace is undoubtedly a virtue, it's also frustrating, frequently blunting its subversive edge. Tourneur directs with superb economy (i.e. no wasted shots) and stages a few brilliant scenes, including a now infamous and highly influential one in a public pool.

More suspense than horror outside of a scene or two. It's an entertaining movie that does more justice to the premise than it probably deserves, and that's in part to the acting, the camera work, cinematography and excellent use of lighting/shadows (especially near the end). Yeah, it's a little silly but it never goes past the point that I couldn't buy into it. I don't love it, but acknowledge its importance and what was accomplished here.

a film about the sorrow, alienation and confusion american civilisation afflicts in desperately maintaining its fragile fictions at all costs. an immigrant female is repressed and othered by a society which denies nature by excluding it from the sanctuary of the frame, until eventually her dormant appetites erupt, and it's as though the viewer is the one being stalked and predated upon. you think the hays code is keeping the monsters at bay, when really it's creating them.

An absolute masterclass of using shadows in film. The film does however suffer from a slight case of being a 'boring, good rationality against delusional and evil superstition' style of story which is irksome, and somewhat goes against the fact Simone Simon's title character is portrayed sympathetically and that the character (and her onscreen charisma) is far more compelling than the other actors.

More of a psychological character study than a typical B-movie horror. Tourneur's restraint as a director - or maybe the limitations imposed on him by the budget - allows him to build tension, but also to develop themes like marital dysfunction, Irina's loneliness, and the role of superstition. My only real niggle is that the ending takes away some of the ambiguity that was building until then, but it's still a good film.

Seriously underrated noir-esque flick from the 40s, most likely forgotten due to all the classic UMM's released during the period. The premise is admittedly a bit silly and it's generally hard to take seriously but the cinematography, mood and atmosphere are so well done and the tension is the main focus, rather than cheap scares. The bus scene is fantastic and actually quite influential, creating the formula for what we know today as the jump scare. Simone Simon is fantastic/gorgeous.

On paper this premise looks really, really lame. But Lewton/Tourneur pull it off with class and style. The unfolding of the plot, while slow, felt satisfying when all was said and done. There were a lot of really great scenes - the swimming pool, the dead bird, the climax. The direction is top notch, with some really interesting shot compositions and noir-ish lighting. Simone Simon is great as the mysterious girl with a feline family curse.

This is one of those where I'm just not all that sure what the point was. The twist is plainly obvious from the first scene, the relationship isn't very well written (I loathe old-Hollywood "married in a week" plots), neither of the two leads are all that likeable, &- while I know this is an unpopular phrase- not much happens. The cinematography & lighting are pretty nice, but beyond that I found myself pretty bored almost the entire time. Alice was cool, kind of wished she was the main focus.

Future horror films like Rosemary's Baby, Carrie, or It Follows all built on what this film lacked: a strong understanding of the psychological horror of the premise. The problems lie in the performances, marriage story melodrama, and the conservative tropes of the time (the sassy black waitress who offers everyone chicken). But other problems come from unlikable "heroes"--including cheating husbands and unethical psychoanalysts. Marginal recommendation for two creepy scenes.

For the first half of the movie, what engaged me most was the spectacle of social traditions of the 40s. For example, agreeing to marry somebody after knowing them for two days, and taking unforgivable offense to people knowing you've visited a psychiatrist. Other than that, there are some genuinely chilling horror scenes, making great use of light and shadow in a way that only black and white movies really can.

Being a product of its time (the instant romance, the now cliche way the animals react) makes the praise on this seem overdone, but it is impressive how the filmmakers manage to deliver a mostly intriguing & increasingly compelling mystery about a woman who can turn into a panther with no special efx whatsoever. The last 20 minutes are riveting as the ostensible heroes suddenly seem a little horrible given the power they have over the lead & you can't help rooting for the ostensible "monster".

I liked its calm, distanced narration and almost perfect lightning that can assuage or accentuate shadows according to the intended mood. Besides that, there isn't much going on except an orientalize and ostracized Serbian woman, who, according to the movie, cannot control her backwards and barbaric drives in a civilized place like the US. It seems like Tourneur believes that the East cannot survive in the West due to its irrationality.

My first experience with a Val Lewton film. The metaphorical implications are intriguing (as in The Devil and Daniel Webster, Simone Simon is a vessel for our xenophobina), but if you're just watching this for fun, it can be dull. It's a short movie, but it still takes quite a while to get to "the good stuff". There's a lot of build-up, but Tourneur does what he can to make it interesting, especially in the noir-style lighting.

More sophisticated than you'd expect from such a b-rate concept. I guess I like the idea of making a genuinely artistic investment into schlock, but I wouldn't call this film exemplary of what I imagine that to look like. A decent and atmospheric supernatural movie, aside from the fact that the female lead looks about as Serbian as Marylin Monroe. But Serbia just stands for outlandish, from a U.S. point of view. That's why we see so many big iron pots. Also has a very unprofessional shrink with a cane sword, no less. Smart choice to stick with very shadowy monster scenes, to great effect.

It's a unique premise for sure and I enjoyed it, but I didn't really think there was much that made it stand out to me. I am a sucker for old horror films and I was looking forward to seeing Cat People, but alas I wanted to like it more than I did. There were some excellent scenes with the stalking and pool segments coming to mind, both possessing a thrilling pace and a solid atmosphere. Coupled with some subpar performances and simplistic writing at parts, and we have a mediocre output.

Val Lewton produced a string of low-budget Horror films in the 1940s, most of which are considered minor to legit classics. This is probably the best of the bunch, loaded with atmosphere and a really great performance from Simone Simon. The only thing holding it back (and this really goes for most of Lewton's Horror pics) is that it drags a bit despite it's short length, there will be stretches where you will probably check the clock. Luckily, there are some fantastic scenes, especially the pool

Re-watched this after a long time and I was happy to see that it still delivers. I think that it's definitely a predecessor of later slow-burn (or "A24") horrors and much more interesting than what Universal was doing around the same time. It works both as a horror film - it doesn't really provide that many scares, but it has an eerie atmosphere -- and the story allows different interpretations. I also thought that Simone Simon was great as the lead and the film kept me captivated.
