Castle Keep

Weird vibe from the start. Didn't get any better.

This is a hidden gem. It starts out making you think it's a war movie, but it's really a morality play told in short philosophical vignettes. Every character is flawed and aware of those flaws, which provide plenty of material for the introspective and probing dialog. Many of the questions they ask are left unanswered for the viewer to keep pondering long after the film has ended. Castle Keep may not be for everyone, but it's a wonderful experience for those who like thoughtful quirky films.

A complete misfire and total mismatch of style and content. It's made in the than popular artsy experimental surrealistic style, consisting of a lot of associative, abrupt edits. The eccentric dialogues, taken directly from the book, feel absolutely absurd and unnatural to the characters and don't work on screen. All this idiosyncratic overstylization prevented me from caring about the characters. The finale action sequence in itself isn't too bad, just too little too late to safe this movie.

This was a fun war movie that focused on the day-to-day life while the guys got a break. Really more of a comedy with the various memorable scenarios such as the Volkswagen, the flute, and the religious objectors. Fav scene: the floating VW.

"Castle Keep" was hard to watch; it felt more like a horror movie. I kept waiting for a vampire to jump out instead of a German soldier.
