I'm generally a Rogers & Hammerstein fan, but I really didn't like this all that much. Billy's a dick.

This film is particularly insipid. The male protagonist has no redeeming qualities, a 35-year-old marries an 18-year-old (pedo much?), the musical numbers feel shoehorned in and are far too long even for R&H, the storyline doesn't hold a drop of water, the supporting actresses (Ruick and Luckey) can't sing or act, and just to cap it all off the film defends wife beating. But it's all OK because God approves, as evidenced by the closing musical number. This film is truly deplorable.

How on earth is it possible that such a bland musical with insupportable characters gave rise to the most wonderful song for the fiercest supporters...

Some memorable music - but a disappointing narrative. I had expected more from Hammerstein.

I honestly could not wait for this movie to be over. If there was less or no singing it would have been a fine movie. The songs were silly and not in a fun way. They just sounded like someone took a regular old script and tried singing the words instead of speaking them. The song and dance made almost no sense and felt out of place and long winded.

Good musical numbers, but an awful story, with awful characters, and an awful message about romance. Enter a girl who falls for a bum because he puffs out his chest a lot, and it goes downhill from there. If there were any sort of amends (re: that there imdb summary), redemption or character growth of any kind I missed it.

Take it as a vehicle for Rodgers & Hammerstein's lovely score, one of the most.

Not my cup of tea. A really weak musical with not much of a setting and too soppy or slimy characters. Especially the male lead, he was unbearable. The only part worth seeing is the spectacular 8-minute song and dance number "June Is Bustin' Out All Over" - a colourful and energetic showstopper which seems out of place among the many other dreary scenes.

I tried so hard to like this movie, Shirley Jones was great and the musical score was wonderful. HOWEVER, cheesy acting, uninspiring lyrics that didn't line up with the rhythms of songs and a unlikable main character made this film rather unexciting.

Tastefully produced version of the fantasy "Liliom", with the Rodgers and Hammerstein evergreen score.

Yuck. Boring songs and gloss that gets on your nerves

Honest, sad, charming and uplifting. A truly first rate set of songs in a brilliant score. Confident and impressive performances set off by great sets and filming. This pulls all the emotional strings and my bet is there will be some damp eyes before the end.

A great Rodgers & Hammerstein Musical
