A magician in a carnival--who actually can read minds and levitate people and objects--works with a superintelligent chimp named Alex, who can also talk. The magician and the chimp soon become the stars of the carnival, drawing in big crowds. However, the wild-animal trainer, who has been displaced by the team as the carnival's top act, decides to kidnap Alex and sell him to a medical laboratory for experimentation, thereby getting rid of his competition. A rather magnificent piece of Americana trash that plays at times like a family-oriented remake of Freaks starring porn actors (this may or may not include the talking chimp. Frankly, nothing surprises me anymore. My soul is a vapid wasteland). I kinda liked this movie.

I don't know what's real anymore. I used to believe in things. I believed in America. But then the scum and the whores and the animal tamers took over and everything's gone to shit. Chimps talking. Mind control. Vaguely amusing tricks involving voluptuous babes. This isn't the good ole' U S of A I grew up in. We had standards. Decency. Now any gov't official can steal your primate life-partner and murder them and there's no one to stop them. Welcome to Obama's America. You can keep the change.

The fact that they took the idea of a talking animal and did *nothing* with it just shows how little *movie* is in this movie. It's *weirdly* boring, somehow less than the sum of its parts - if you stood around and taped the background goings-on at an actual traveling carnival, with minimal editing for watchability, it would be more interesting than this.

I am not sure the point of this. When a movie has a talking chimp but doesnt FEATURE the talking chimp you have to question everything

I'm willing to accept that the great apes are capable of thought and conscience, and that an argument can be made that they deserve personhood. However, that just means that the chimp in this should be treated as an accomplice with malice aforthought rather than a hapless victim.

Does basically nothing with its premise until it remembers to stick some conflict in about two thirds of the way through. But no, we really needed more random shots of a carnival, thanks.

Contender for worst movie ever, but totally worth watching if you like to watch bad movies for a laugh

More of a slice of life in '70s small town America than an actual plot. Unglamorous but sexy ladies in tight shirts. Alex was the best actor in the film by a mile. Adamson even snuck in a free parade scene at the end. Fav scenes: Alex driving; Markov faced with the prospect of a dying unresponsive Alex but instead of kissing or dropping a tear to revive him, Markov instead poses an existentialist question faced by many a Marvel superhero: What good is my power if I can't protect the ones I love?

The whole premise is "what if we made a movie with basically no plot set at a shitty carnival?" Goes about as well as you'd expect.
