Set in 1984, before Perestroika, main action is divided between Leninisk, a hideous industrial town where Capt. Zhurov (Alexei Poluyan) lives with his drunk-to-the-point-of-oblivion mother (Valentina Andryukova) and an isolated shack where Alexei (Alexei Serebryakov) and his wife Tonya (Natalya Akimova) sell grain alcohol. I was a little confused by some hyping this as the epitome of brutality, and others as a poignant criticism of Soviet Russian politics. Honestly, it's neither. I would describe it as a low-budget, low-key communist-party-themed ensemble horror farce. The filmmaker obviously has a less-than-rosy view of the Soviet Era, but it's expressed through grotesque hyperbole more than anything else.

Ultraviolent. Kafka CCCP style. Don't watch this unless you have an iron stomach.

With its brutal blend of psychological horror, nihilistic violence, political commentary and painstaking period reproduction, Gruz 200 has a lot in common with another calculated punch-in-the-face of a movie, Memories of Murder. This rotten tale relies less on clever storytelling devices and more on the unrelenting bleakness and insanity of its random sequence of violent acts perpetrated by both sides of the law. A strangely compelling film which leads you down a dark alley and never lets go.

Russians show, that they can shoot a good, expressive film.
