I am starting to think that I need to grade PSH movies on a curve because I just can't really seem to find one that I dislike. I enjoy his portrayal of Capote as he works to get the information to complete his famous book In Cold Blood, and the struggles that he has between his relationship with the actual people involved and his own hunger for more literary success. The guy who plays Perry the inmate is pretty darn good too. Makes me want to go back and reread the book.

Very good performances from the entire cast (including a few great ones from Hoffman and Collins Jr.) make up for the slow and deliberate pace of the film. While it's enjoyable and engaging, it's also an incredibly dry and trying film. As much as I was taken in by the performances and wanted to see how things played out, it's also fairly predictable, and I was glad it was over afterward. Hoffman fully deserved the Oscar for this, but the man could be nominated for nearly every role he takes on.

I've never read In Cold Blood and really had no prior knowledge of Truman Capote going into this film. Despite that, Hoffman's performance is brilliant and entertaining to the point that he carries the otherwise standard biopic on his shoulders the entire time.

Hoffman is amazing, but the movie fails to provide the emotional connection that makes you sympathise with Capote's state of mind towards the end of the film. I feel this is partly due to a script that could have used some extra revision and partly due to the fact that Clifton Collins Jr. simply could not hold his weight against the power performance from Hoffman. I find it unfortunate that it eventually just comes off as a Hoffman vehicle, because this had the potential to be a true classic.

A solid film with specacular acting by Hoffman. However, I never felt like I was a part of this movie, never felt like I was privileged to know how anyone REALLY felt. At the end, despite a death, I felt empty, numb, which I'm certain isn't the aim of the film. However, I don't know much about the book or its impact on society (time to check Wikipedia!), and this was a great film to fill one in.

We all know PSH was an outstanding actor (sadly missed as much as any lost talent in my lifetime) but his disappearance into the character of Capote here is truly remarkable. The movie, while focusing on a specific series of events in TC's life, presents Capote as a bit of a dick prone to exaggeration, jealousy and manipulation, something that my subsequent research on the man seems to back up. 'Capote' is a bit of slog at times but PSH holds the viewer's interest until the end.

A fantastic, strongly directed, tremendously acted portrait of a narcissistic artist faced with the dilemma of pursuing artistic vision or human compassion. A noteworthy debut from Miller who's proving to be a great director of biopics which follow almost obsessively driven men in the most extraordinary periods of their lives. Though his films are simply structured, his ability to bring out the multiple dimensions of his subjects seems effortless and fresh, and Capote is no exception.

Very good film. I get the feeling there's a stoicism to the film due to it trying too hard to be good, it could've done with a little more relaxation. This is sharply directed, more often than not with terrifically gloomy cinematography, and the centrepiece is PSH's role as Capote, which he completely engulfed and made this character's artistic quest for a moral angle an interesting watch, but this feels a little too restraint within its own isolated story.

It's not so hard to do a Capote impression, since his fey mannerisms were exaggerated, but it's much harder to convey the steel and fury under that drunken facade. Hoffman's portrayal is electrifying, the more so for its obliqueness and murmurs. His savage indifference when dealing with the killer is the residue of his simmering patience.

Though slowly paced at times, the narrative effectively showcases Capote's interview and writing process while revealing his strengths and character flaws. PSH is simply marvelous, capturing Truman at his very essence. Truly, his performance is the main draw of the film, though Capote's relationship with Harper Lee was interesting as well. Recommended for fans of post-war American literature and journalism, it also serves as a unique companion to the book that inspired the film's story.

The problem I have with Capote is everything that is going around Hoffman. Everything but him seems to be lacking that final spark, that one thing that would take this from a very good movie to a classic. The movie does well in portraying both Capote's sympathy for Perry Smith, an interesting subject on the whole, and his state of mind but seems to be missing a final kicker; an attachment from the viewer. Still worthy of Hoffman's Oscar win though, it is a hard movie to make up your mind about.
