It feels churlish to be too harsh on what is a flagrant “student” effort, but while this does show flashes of some of the dead pan absurdity that would flavour Parker and Stone’s later work, it’s a fairly mild and middling effort overall, with Parker unable to make a mark as star or director, and while the idea is funny, it doesn’t really develop in a particularly interesting way, more or less peaking with the “Schpadoinkle” day musical number. Interesting enough to be worthwhile for fans.

Bloody musical western centered on the trial of Alferd Packer, a miner accused of cannibalism in the 1870s. Surprisingly competent and funny for a student film, showing that Trey Parker had a solid sense of comedy and timing even very early in his career. The songs are kinda catchy and funny, too, despite the fact that no one in the movie can sing worth a damn.

This is fucking bizarre. Plenty of jokes kinda fall flat, but for some reason it still works. The songs are so hilariously shitty that you can't help but love them, particularly Let's Build a Snowman.

An amusing first effort from the South Park creators, before they beat dead horses nowadays.

(Viewed on 06/09/15): Cannibal The Musical is an early (i.e. post college) offering from Parker-Stone made on a shoestring that only received exposure when South Park took off. It's supposedly based on true events, but the historical setting is just a unique excuse to peddle profanity and gore with cheeky aplomb. Its crudity can be a hindrance, and it doesn't know when to quit, but its home-movie-with-friends vibe is charming, the songs are catchy and the Chinese Indians gag is classic.

Watch it. Then watch it again immediately after. The first time won't land. The second will be monumental. Something about the anticipation just makes everything click. Then watch it with the commentary on because that's right up there in laugh factor. A true rarity for comedy, but each time genuinely gets better than the last.

I really wanted to like this, but it peaked in the first five minutes and then meandered until the end.

Just like Blair Witch Project showed you can make a great horror film on a low budget, Cannibal is a great comedy made as a student film, it definitely deserves more recognition.

I appreciate their realistic portrayal of Indian culture.

It was a bit terrible and never gets as violent as the first couple of minutes, but it gave me a sub-Troma vibe. With that being said, many of the jokes did land for me and I appreciate it for what it is.

It's not quite as hilarious as I remember, although the majority of the songs are great, but I have fond memories of watching this, and other things I shouldn't have been watching, late at night on the Horror Channel when I was but a child. I couldn't rank it lower than 50 if I tried. Shpadoinkle!

I don't think Parker and Stone could have started their careers on a better note; after viewing this and reading the script from "The Book of Mormon", I'm really hoping they are able to make that into a film one day. Also, I like how Trey billed himself as 'Juan Schwartz'.

I see what they were trying to do. But they failed. Book of Mormon does everything this does, only better.

Some gags fall flat, but it throws everything on the wall and quite a bit of it ends up sticking. The low production value and cheesy music is endearing.

very funny especially for fans of troma and more importantly South Park. The songs were funny and catchy and the characters were hillarious. There was a little bit of gore too which made it even funnier.

If you can, watch it with the commentary track from Trey and friends. Drink along with them too!

Much more amusing than I expected, given it's a student film and the awful trailer. Somewhat rough in every way, but it's clear Parker and Stone would become very successful. Funniest of all, it's probably the best movie under the Troma banner.

Stone and Parker's first attempt at humour really is adorably inept - the first season of South Park probably had more convincing acting than they manage in this live action film - but it's got a surprising amount of good gags and decent songs.

This movie is hilarious and a great introduction to the humor of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. There are also a lot of jokes/themes here that have made their way to South Park and some of their later films. Anyone want a build a snowman?

Totally silly and stupid but, often, very funny.

No movie will make you want to build a snowman more than Cannibal! The Musical. Trey Parker's musical comedy based on the story of Colorado legend Alfred Packer is equal parts Oklahoma! and South Park. Despite its absurdly brilliant script and catchy tunes, the film's amateur cast and look hurt in certain places.

If you like trey Parker and Matt Stone movies you will LOVE this movie. One of their early films (pre-South Park, I believe) and it's not as funny as some of their later stuff, but it is entertaining nonetheless.

going in, i was very skeptical. i left with a sore stomach from laughing so much. simply hilarious. the funniest musical i've ever seen. this film will have you and your friends singing for days on end. sure to make your day a shpadoinkle one!

Hilarious and obscure musical and probably one of the funnest movies to watch in the history of the world. "Hang the bastard, hang 'em high!"

Fudge, Packer?

im not sure why most of the scores for this movie are so low. if you love trey parker, you need to see this. not as good as team america and such, but it was a student film! As far as student films go this was awesome. and it cause parker to fail out of school

Shpadoinkley good film. Havent seen it in years, but the low budget, stupidity of the film made it great.

It had some funny parts. I just expected the creators of South Park to have made the funniest movie ever, but it was a little slow. I hear the commentary is good, maybe I'll give that a shot

Bad songs, horrible acting and a dull plot. Although the bad acting is probably intentional, this doesn't come close to what Parker achieved with South Park.

One of the whackiest musicals ever. Some wickedly catchy songs and strange sort of humor makes this memorable. This is a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, and it shows, much fun to be had in this sphedoinkel flick.

An early effort by the guys stone & parker, based on a real life 19th century event. best described as tasteless (unlike the subject matter). Toe knee :-)

This might be offsides, but I have to bump this movie up for having the greatest commentary track of all time.

So much fun to watch. Excellent songs. One of the very best commentary tracks ever.

Stupid as hell and horribly low-budget. Still, for days afterward I found myself humming the theme music. Right now I'm trying not to remember it so it won't be stuck in my head. Dig it.

Parker and Stone's Troma movie is fittingly amateurish, and has some camp appeal but not the entertainment value of the rest of their stuff.

Comments: Although it has its moments, I really don't think this film deserves the praise it has gotten. I'm glad this has been rediscovered since South Park's success, but it really doesn't warrent attention in and of itself. Trey Parker and Matt Stone have certainly done better since.

A truly shpadoinkle film, and I daresay the best student film ever made. Great soundtrack, absolutely hilarious. I love this film unconditionally despite its many flaws. It's one of the reasons why I love musicals so much. Nice hat!
