A more relatable story to me than most of his other novels, the movie is hit or miss at times on the acting, but it succeeds in being a whimsical atmospheric study of a bunch of characters making do with what they have.

There are a few well celebrated Steinbeck adaptations out there, and they always seemed a little unspectacular to me, but that's not surprising because his books were always the same way. So, this being the only Steinbeck book I really liked, it makes just as much sense that the movie was likewise pretty awesome. Nolte is awesome, Winger is ok, but the characters and the story are what makes this one. Check it out, this is the unsung champion of Steinbeck adaptations.
