Possibly the most boring version of this *amazing* real story about women organizing for illegal abortions that someone could have told. The Sigourney Weaver voice over at the end reveals how much story was there and did not make it into the film, because they had to center on the character of Banks and add useless subplots about her kid and husband and neighbor. There is no real conflict or dramatic stakes. Brb, gonna go watch the documentary, urgh.

Eh, nothing much to see here. Everything is on the nose and the story is straightforward. It's sad that women in that situation felt so helpless and that our society's way of thinking has seemingly backtracked several decades, but there isn't enough emotional heft and internal struggle presented here. It's possible to be light while still packing a punch. It's also possible to be funny while you try to be light.

“Call Jane” is a powerful film that sheds light on the consequences of pre-Roe v. Wade times and the importance of safe and legal abortions. Despite some shortcomings in the storytelling, the film’s performances, particularly Elizabeth Banks as Joy, and poignant message make it a must-watch.
