Cactus Flower

I have little patience for the sex romps of the Fifties and Sixties, but here is one that really wins me over. The dialogue is sharp (if mostly predictable) and the comic delivery of the primary actors is impeccable. I had never heard of Cactus Flower, so it is an unexpected treasure for me, one that I hope bodes well for a summer vacation full of nice cinematic surprises.

Fine farce spotlightling a trio of terrific stars, with Hawn and Matthau making a convincing couple, and Bergman stealing the film in a wonderful performance as matronly receptionist who blossoms into a lively, earthy being as the film progresses. Nice supporting performances by Weston as a lech, and Lenz as Hawn's boy-next-door. Diamond's screenplay is also a successful combination of genuine emotion and sharp one-liners. Great fun and very entertaining.

Hawn's character was horrible, but she was friggin' hot in the 60's. This is an excellent screwball movie and Matthau and Bergman were in top form.

A great time capsule of a period where the early 1960's status quo was meeting the social change of the late 60's. Unlike other Hollywood pictures of the era (like Guess Who's Coming to Dinner), this film fully gets the issue at hand. It nails the hypocrisy of gender dynamics & mores. It also has fun with a now standard sitcom trope of leads getting into character to keep up a charade. Hawn is really good, and it is eerie to look at the film now & see how much she looks like her daughter.

Plays were the original sitcoms. "Oh, Walter Matthau must surely be her father..."

The way white people dance in this film... priceless.

Goldie Hawn = ?

It's breezy fun, and some of the lines were kind of clever.

Groovy and hilarious.

Everything you'd expect and also some things you'd not expect from a love triangle involving Mattheu, Hawn and Bergman. One of those films that seems to really succeed in capturing and projecting the very essence of the 1960s (at least what I understand life was like in the 1960s, I was not around then). Perhaps because in 1969 the decade that was coming to a close was already ripe for nostalgising by those who'd embraced the drug, sex and rock 'n' roll of this period.

There's no better selling point than the fun that Matthau, Bergman and Hawn are having but Rick Lenz as Igor was actually my favorite character. Saves a girl from suicide, walks around in only a towel and generally doesn't want to take part in any tomfoolery. Silliness benefits from straight players.

Implausible but cute.

A predictable screwball comedy. Nothing about it stands out to me aside from Ingrid Bergman, who makes the best of a badly written role. I'm stunned that Goldie Hawn won an oscar for her over-the-top performance as a dumb blonde.

Can't say I get it but I like the performances

Em honra do centenário de Gene Saks. Todos esses anos achando que era mais uma comédia tolinha de fins dos anos 60, mas é um filme divertidíssimo, ri horrores com ele. Ás vezes a Goldie Hawn me irritava com um tipo intrometido com quem eu não teria a mínima paciência na vida real, mas em todo caso ela está ótima no papel, assim como os demais atores. This film as a good cast. The actors all do a good job with their respective roles. The script has some good moments but but it is easy to predict the ending long before it happens. Overall I would recommend this film.
