A small group of Spanish explorers get separated from their group and lost in 16th century America, and one of them becomes a shaman of sorts. I'm sure none of this is anthropologically sound, but it's fascinating watching the Europeans interact with the various native groups. Very slow in places, and the point is somewhat elusive, but the journey is one worth taking. Kinda like Aguirre if Klaus Kinski was into psychotropic drugs instead of megalomania and incest.

fantastic, got totally immersed in it.beautiful cinematography, costumes & makeup for the natives made it all seem like a documentary.story doesn't allow for any hand-holding more like grabbing you by the wrist & pulling you along.each shift in alvar's journey both physically & emotionally/spiritually comes as a bit of a jolt, but in a good way. the film paints a detailed picture of these lost natives as not-savage, not-grotesque, just decidedly different but still completely human.

A hidden gem. One of the more honest depictions of Native America and the Conquest from the viewpoint of a man between worlds.

Cabeza de Vaca (Cow Head), the treasurer, was one of the few survivors of a conquistador expedition that hugged the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico until succumbing to the forces of nature and hostile natives. Based on his true account, this is the missing link between Werner Herzog and Martel's "Zama" (with perhaps some "Embrace of the Serpent" thrown in). A visually arresting, meticulous and sober recreation of a merciless, even horrific pre-Columbian world.

Has a great look and the choice to use the language barrier made this a much more immersive experience than I've seen before in a story like this. On the down side, the pacing was tedious at times and I really don't know what I'm supposed to take away from the movie.

Visually stimulating, impressively filmed but something may have been lost in translation as I was a bit confused at times. I may also just be stupid.

This is an amazing movie, one of those flicks that refuses to romanticize Native Americans while still reflecting the sad reality of the conquest. Cabeza de Vaca's journey is thrilling and phantasmagoric.
