Burying the Ex

Joe Dante was never a world changing director, but in his prime he made a few sly genre bending films that occasionally subverted convention and/or at the very least provided quality escapist fare. Like John Landis, his obsession with old sci-fi and horror tropes has failed to connect with contemporary audiences, and Burying The Ex is no exception. It is an ugly, cheap and dated film that fancies itself as a quasi-tribute to EC comics, but it lacks a morbid sense of wit and invention. Shame.

A complete, absolute, 100% guilty pleasure. It's pretty dumb and looks cheap, but it's also pretty irresistible. At its best, it works up some of the fast-paced, colorful, gross-in-a-fun-way charm of the best old EC horror comics. If I'd have found this movie when I was, like, 13, it'd have been one of my favorite horror movies ever.

The basic idea is kind of fun and there are some fun moments, but generally this isn't very impressive

The acting was the best part. The comedy isn't good, the story felt reminiscent of Life of Beth, and it just isn't that entertaining, unfortunately.

It's a 30-minute Tales from the Crypt episode strung out to a full feature. Not perfect, but it gets the job done.
