A skeptical college professor discovers that his wife has been practicing magic for years. A very well-shot, well-acted and sometimes creepy film. But the plot threads felt too detached from one another, and the ending was less than fully satisfying.

Psychological horror is the best kind of horror, and this is a very good one. It really plays on the tension between superstition and rationalism quite well and builds up to an excellent finale.

There're some compelling conflicts set up in the first third, but both the second and third act set up mysteries that go on too long (will the wife really sacrifice herself? what's causing all the strangeness?) & this really starts to feel like it's based on a stretched out short story. What really derails this though is the filmmakers' desire to avoid answering whether any of this is really magic or just fearful imagination & coincidence, but that's dopey given all the coincidences required.

Kind of meh at first, but overacting and soundtrack pathos aside, it gets considerably creepier as it goes along. Quite a few imaginative and evocative scenes.

This is pretty darn good. Quite pro-woman for its time, very well acted by all involved, & tightly paced so that it makes the absolute most of its 90 minutes. You honestly can't even tell that three people- three men, no less- wrote it. There's a very effective eerie vibe to the whole thing, & the black & white cinematography is beautiful. The third act is where it gets a little silly, & sadly it kind of lost me during the last fifteen minutes or so, but there's really a lot of good stuff here.

Some good promise, though never reaches as high as it should have. Still, it has a few nice stylistic touches, such as the opening magic curse-dispelling monologue over a black screen.

I'm beginning to realise that having Richard Matheson on board raises the chances of a film being decent. Ditto Sidney Hayers. This is very nicely shot, and cast, even taking into account my Wyngarde favouritism. Not sure what was going on with those high-waisted trousers, though. The developing plot has enough ambiguity to keep you guessing, even though some of the threads felt a bit undeveloped. A nice early creeper that perhaps warrants a bit more attention.

One of those overly melodramatic 'classic' horror movies. It kept me interested with various interesting filming techniques and ridiculous giant eagle attacks.
