Burn Country

Noirish mystery has some intriguing moments, but attempts to marry an oddball TWIN PEAKS atmosphere with the plot convolutions of L.A. CONFIDENTIAL never really comes off, mostly due to a sluggish pace and a dull leading performance from Rains. Much of the rest of the cast appear to be reading from completely different books; Franco's strung-out hill-billy is fine, but Leo is the stand-out as the no-nonsense sheriff. Had Leo been the lead proper, we may have really had something here.
