Could have fallen over into silly cliché and misery porn at any time, but the unsentimental direction keeps it grounded and real

Cold, passionless telling of a story that should have fostered more anger is still largely compelling, even if much of it resembles a superficial retreading of MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY; Heng embodies his "young man coming of age" quite well, but the character remains a blank slate; it would have been more satisfying to see the psychological devolution he experiences at the hands of his captors. Very well shot, with Rathjen effectively placing his audience in the sweaty, ugly confines of the trawler.

Interesting setting that is quite authentically conveyed, but the story is too simple and the telling all too matter-of-factly.

Can feel a little like an "issue movie" at times, but sidesteps the misery porn trap. Central relationship is one big cliché but well-acted. Sequences of genuine suspense, well-judged horror, and surprising pathos. Deliberate but smooth pacing — the images glide over the story like a sheet of water over glass. Finds real poetry in the final act.

That is too much sorrow and atrocity in the world, many of us possibly will never witness throughout our lifetime. Only people who suffer from poverty and adverse life conditions will go through it and pass away. This film sheds light on the lives of people, neglected by the world.
