Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles

The first animated film about making an actual documentary that I know of. I like the artistic direction and the music, the Spanish and French dubbing is very natural. I didn't like the design of the inhabitants of the Hurdes, I found it dehumanizing. The argument at the end with his friend is seemingly coming from nowhere. I wish we could see more about after the release of the Hurdes, like how the public received it. Overall, a good watch, especially after having seen the original documentary.

Utterly fascinating film uses animation creatively, making the somewhat unlikely subject matter feel entirely at home; Simó utilises surrealist techniques borrowed from the master which would likely be silly or unconvincing in live action, while creating a vivid sense of time and place. The epilogue's overly emotional focus on Ramon's fate feels like an overstated shoe-horn and is the only serious misstep for this otherwise delightful and unique look at Buñuel's guerilla film-making style.
