Overhyped. I had a lot of people tell me how great this movie was and it sure wasn't. there were a couple of moments when I chuckled out loud, but this was a very boring movie. I guess it would help if I was a fan of any of the actors involved, even though I don't mind Robbins, I'm not that big of a fan of Sarandon;s or Costner's.

Rewatched with the Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins audio commentary and now I want them to do other commentaries together for movies they didn't even star in. Tim and Kevin Watch Movies. I'm not suggesting a patent on the idea because I'd be happy for someone else to make this happen. Maybe you!

So this was supposed to be a romantic baseball film? It's everything but romantic baseball film. I only see some loosely attached sequences with highly dislikable characters in them. Speaking of which, the only thing we know about the characters is that they do love sexual intercourse. Gosh, they even put naked figures having sex on top of their wedding cake. I wish Ron Shelton'd written the script after masturbating, obviously his mind was somewhere else under his pants. I wouldn't enjoy this e

I thought Sex & the City is to blame for this type of women character, but here in much older movie Sarandon acts a middle aged woman whose sophisticated vagina likes to devour beautiful cocks and in the process teaches their owners the truths of life. Costner uses his good old 'no acting' acting method. Yuck.

This film thinks it's far more clever than it really is. While I'll give it a bit of credit for having some originality, I mostly did not enjoy the film. The characters are obnoxious and unlikable and they get dull rather quickly. I was hoping this would be a baseball film. It's not. It's like 10% baseball, 90% shitty romance. I find it strange that this poorly developed Lifetime film is considered one of the greatest sports films ever made. To make things worse, it's dated and hasn't aged well.

A largely flat and generic baseball movie that gains points for some mild irreverence and critique of the mythology surrounding the sport. Sarandon's character is a compelling if wildly problematic way of integrating a female perspective (and romance) into the typically macho sports movie genre, and although the character writing leaves something to be desired, she, Costner, and Robbins all offer some strong charisma that makes the movie eminently watchable.

Costner's rise to stardom is clear, but Sarandon is annoying, and it is neither consistently funny or interesting enough to justify its 'reputation'. Why did Criterion release it? The mind boggles. Cobb is far superior.

The weakest of the Costner 'not-actually-about-baseball' movies, arriving only a year before the masterful Field of Dreams. That said, the writing is witty, with a hilarious clowning performance from Robbins and entertaining comedic skits on and off the ballpark. I also appreciate the drama of characters attempts to shape their narrative through sport, whether by hard-won insight, superstition or pop-philosophical musings- even if, much like the film itself, life always tends to drift off-base.

Great perfomances from some incredible young actors before they blossomed into the superb superstars that they have become...A classic underdog sports story told in an unforgettable fashion with stellar chemistry. A few scenes were also filmed at a bar I used to visit in Raleigh, NC.

Surprisingly... progressive(?) for it's time. I watched this 35 years after its initial release and it mostly reminded me of Sex and the City with a sports flair. Personally the best takeaway for me was Costner. It's a kink fantasy for me that a guy would be the one who is more abstinent than the woman, actually more interested in the intellectual substance of a relationship, rather than what a woman can offer him physically. Alas, Sarandon, while witty, not that likeable to me.

The best baseball was in the opening montage with the black and white photos. Then there was a pretty terrible love triangle trying to interject itself into ... is it a comedy with Robbins? Or a drama with Cosner? Some funny parts (best scene: opting for candlesticks as a wedding present during the mound conference), but it never really came together as a complete movie for me.

Enjoyable if leisurely paced film works best if viewed as a stunning showcase for Sarandon; an already intriguing, alluring character elevated by the actor's subtlety and compassion. Less interesting and successful are her male counterparts, though Costner and Robbins do their best to inject their fairly superficial characters with some resonance. The mid-section where Sarandon disappears is definitely the low-point; the baseball antics may have more appeal to students of the game.

A reasonably fun baseball romantic dramedy with a charismatic Kevin Costner and some generic but basically likable romance stuff. I was initially befuddled by them repeatedly calling major league ball "the show," but eventually warmed to it. I liked the scene where Costner called the umpire a cocksucker.

It's an unconventional sports comedy, but it's one of the wittiest, sexiest, authentic and smartly written baseball films ever made with a perfect "anti-climatic" ending. Along with three terrific performances from Costner, Sarandon and Robbins (backed up by a funny supporting cast), Bull Durham will have you laughing and also make you think about what really goes on in those catcher-pitcher meetings during actual baseball games. This is one of my dad's favorite movies. He's also a huge fan of baseball, and that's the crucial element. Bull Durham is an excellent representation of baseball, but has numerous faults as a movie. It's reasonably enjoyable, and I enjoyed the performances of the three leads, though I'm not sure I completely bought their characters. Watch Slap Shot instead.

An unexpected gem of a film that's much more comedic and much less cliche than it sounds. I can't say it was flawless, especially not with 20 minutes of extraneous romance tacked on to the end of what otherwise would've been a tight 90-minutes, but it WAS hilarious and DEFINITELY something I'll be revisiting again. You need not like baseball to appreciate it. Recommended.

The best part is the dialogue that happens in game and in locker room. They made it a bit absurd to add to the humor, but there is a fair amount of realism in it. Anyone who played organized sports of any kind will certainly be able to appreciate it. Everything else in the movie is completely mediocre. In fact it feels like everything else this movie does is inferior to the very similar Major League (although it came out a year earlier so it at least had originality on it's side).

I like this film. I know people have their own feelings about Costner, but I've always liked him and this film is own of his best. Its funny as hell, especially the "cocksucker" scene, and it feels like an honest tribute to America's pastime. Where Filed of Dreams (also starring Costner) made Baseball players into immortal Gods, this film turns them into Joe Schmos. A film that is not sided. This movie is always on top of Rotten tomatoes best sport movies, a deserved honor.

Shelton doesn't do much to flesh out the various members of the team or its hangers-on, and the scope of the action quickly shrinks to just three: a young pitching phenom, a veteran catcher, and a self-styled quasi-religious groupie. A romantic triangle, of sorts, develops.

A great look into minor league baseball life as told from the players and the people who take pride in their local team. What Hoosiers is to 1950's high school basketball, this is to the minor leagues. I've never thought of Sarandon as a hottie, but this almost makes me a believer. Costner was born to play these sports roles. The scene with Robert Wuhl sorting out everyone's problems at the pitchers mound is classic. And Robbins intentionally beaning the mascot never fails to send me into hysterics.
