The valley girl has gone the way of Kristy Swanson (it's disappeared off the face of the Earth except to periodically show up on the SyFy channel) and all for the better. But this is an entertaining movie with a pretty amazing cast when you look at it. I didn't even know Ben Affleck and Hillary Swank were in a movie together. Thomas Jane and David Arquette? I've got to watch this again.

Kristy the Movie Carrier The story is weak but it’s nice to look at, like you know, whatever! Buffy gets cramps when vampires are nearby, the same thing happens to me with dairy.

Viewed February 25, 2022. Kristy Swanson’s performance is charming enough, and I guess it’s cool when she kicks the stakes into the vampires’ hearts. But the studied cleverness of Joss Whedon’s dialogue is actively, irredeemably annoying and, despite the flailing efforts of the stacked cast, not a single joke in the movie is good. Somehow, Whedon converted his elevated version of hack writing into a popular and critically acclaimed career. Good riddance.

Perhaps I could forgive the shoddy outfits and production values (I did for the 1st season of the TV series), but the slang-filled dialogue is forced and downright atrocious. The performances aren't much better ranging from forgettable to bad. There are a few funny moments, though the film is too inconsistent for them to land. This film's legacy stands solely on the success of the TV show, existing as curiosity rather than on its own merits.

Sitcomish teeny “horror” movie is never scary, and seems to be aiming for the self-kidding, wise-ass tone that the SCREAM movies would later perfect, though outside of some obvious pot-shots at the “valley girl” stereotype, this lacks any sort of (heh) bite, telling its story fairly straight even as Reubens mugs furiously from the sidelines and Hauer… was Hauer even in this? Sutherland is the highlight, bringing just the right world-weary tone to make his absurd dialogue plausible.

Ok, first of all, Joss Whedon is total dick. Disregarding that while watching this movie, this thing gave me total What We Do In The Shadows -types of vibes. It's funny and knows how to make fun of its silly plot and one-liners in a way that I saw refined in the Buffy-series later. It made me laugh plenty of times and I was entertained. It's got some great songs, too. Cheesy and fun, it's exactly what I was looking for from a Buffy movie.

While not as good as the series (but something about apple and oranges), but this original movie was more enjoyable that I remembered it to be. Especially the first part has a very nice "Mean Girls" satire vibe to it. The film actually loses some steam when Buffy quite suddenly expects her role as slayer. Still very enjoyable overall.

So this is really clunky & beyond unpolished, & it does a fabulous job for the first 20 minutes or so of making Buffy a supremely unlikable heroine, but it does get a little bit better. To be honest, I don't see why it has such an awful reputation- it's not good, but not so terrible either. Kristy Swanson does a good job as Buffy, even if Sarah Michelle Gellar would do it better, & this early version of the character has a pretty decent arc. The story's a mess, though, so...yeah. Just iffy.

While it's nowhere near anything but maybe the worst episodes of the series, there is an undeniable charm to the movie... or rather, several, in bits and pieces. Swanson does all she can, Root is the only one who's on pitch, Reubens hams it up until he realises what movie he's in, and the dialogue has its moments. Otherwise, Kuzui's direction is leaden where it needs to zing and laughable where it needs to be serious, Hauer is dull, and the plot is dust.

Anyone who thinks this is worse than the TV series is comparing apples to oranges. It's the perfect kind of early-90s high school movie. It's up there with Rock n Roll High School. Stephen Root also manages to do what he does best - show up briefly and outshine everybody.

This comedy has some funny moments, including one of the funniest death scenes of all time. However the movie is very uneven and some jokes fall flat. The villain isn't very interesting and Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry don't really have any chemistry together.

What Bill and Ted did for time travel (i.e., less than nothing), Buffy does for vampire hunting. An airheaded high-school cheerleader, whose yellow-and-purple costume is neutralized by jaundiced cinematography, is the Chosen One to combat an infestation of bloodsuckers in Southern California. Mostly flat outside of Swanson's chest and a handful of amusing lines. Reubens is given a chance to prove he can play a role other than Pee-wee Herman, but not a chance to prove he ought to.

Seven seasons of the greatest TV show of all time aside, this is a fun little early 90's comedy. Despite laughably bad action sequences, lame vampires, and the mutilation of Joss's original script, there is still a little bit of Whedony goodness that slips through. Kristy Swanson is pretty likable and the supporting cast is surprisingly good/respectable.

This movie is terrible in just about every way. It's only real value is to show us how horrible of a fashion sense we had int he 80s. If you and friends like to watch bad movies and make fun of them then shoot this to the top of your list because it is a classic in that sense.Anyone wanting to see something with any amount of quality should just watch the TV show instead.

Well, Kristy Swanson is no Sarah Michelle Gellar, but the screenplay is classic Whedon gold, and I actually like popular airhead Buffy just as much as troubled weirdo Buffy, she gives the film a sort of Heathers feel I never got from the show. Campy as all get-out, but very fun.

It took me awhile to watch the show because of this movie (I'm glad I finally did). The plot moves along so fast its like it needs to be somewhere so its only hitting the key points of the story. You never establish any connection with the characters who die or even the ones that live. Overall pretty awful.

This early version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is very different from the popular show. The movie is a different kind of funny, and it's safe to say that it's more serious and dark although still a comedy. Overall, it's not as captivating as the show, but it also is much shorter than the long running series. Pretty good!

Oh, Paul Reubens, while I can't fault you for masturbating in that movie theater so long ago, I have to wonder why you couldn't whack it at home like the rest of us. If only that tragedy had not occurred, there might be more classic performances like the one you gave in this film. Bravo, you unforunate man.

I hadn't seen this in ages and only saw the 1st season of the series. This felt like a good gateway film to watch with our daughter as she's getting into Stranger Things etc. I didn't remember how good the cast is: Sutherland, Hauer, Petty, Arquette, Swank, etc. It's more serious in tone than I remember the series being. It doesn't fully work and feels like a collection of ideas - which would be further developed in the series. But it's still pretty fun and works also as a 90's time capsule.
