Coscarelli, Campbell, and company take this schlocky B-movie premise about a geriatric Elvis secretly living in some run down nursing home in East Texas, who alongside a black "JFK", fight off an ancient soul-sucking Egyptian mummy, and instead made this oddly poignant and beautifully charming little fantasy/comedy/drama about the elderly. The movie makes me really think I should probably visit my grandpa more often...and at the very least make sure he's safe at the VA from butt-sucking mummies.

The humor in this story is fantastic and Bruce Campbell is always a treat. A b-movie that has fun with itself to the full extent, and all the actors, and Coscarelli himself do great jobs making this a fun and entertaining movie.

Weirdly original, and fun. Not the knock-down climax you'd expect, but just fine. See it just to see how well they pull off a bizarre idea. Just like many of his other films, only Bruce could do it.

Funny, clever and interesting premise. Problem is, there's not much to the movie besides the premise. Kinda leaves you empty. Loses momentum for long stretches of time, pausing any forward development of the story to tack on additional quirks to the situation. Fun and amusing, but doesn't really stick with you. Bonus points for superior originality, though.

This was nothing like I feared it would be. Brilliantly shlocky premise done strange kind of justice by the genuinely heartfelt touch of Coscarelli. Driven by the immense underlining sadness of the wacky idea of the King of Rock 'n' Roll, president of the USA & a 3000-year-old pharaoh ending up in a rundown East Texas retirement home, discarded with extreme indignity by a society enamoured with myth & disgusted by mortality. Sold by wonderful performances & a lovely score.

Thought it got off to a bit of a slow start but after a while, everything started clicking hard. It's wildly original, funny at times, and strangely emotional (not that it's something that will make you cry). Of course, Campell is great as Elvis and Ossie Davis is great as the black JFK, who got dyed to become black. It's just a fun, original comedy.

There are some tonal and budgetary problems that impact somewhat negatively on the end result, but there is no denying the originality of this quirky little film that takes the Elvis legend and creates a whole new mythos around it. Bruce Campbell's portrayal of the King is superb, locating the right mix of humour and pathos, while Davies' straight take on a black JFK is delighfully absurd. It's also an oddly moving film with something meaningful to say about society's treatment of the elderly.

B-movie greatness. I had no idea JFK was black and still alive in a nursing home with an aging Elvis. My only regret was watching this alone, as with all B-movies, especially those of the Campbell variety, it should be watched with a group to enjoy it properly.

If you think of this as a horror movie, a magical realist biopic, a comedy, or a bromance drama, you'll be wrong on all counts (and you won't enjoy it as much). It may just be the best film about our treatment of the elderly, and about minor - but nonetheless significant - redemption.

Bruce Campbell starring as an aging Elvis who teams up with a black JFK to fight off an ancient Egyptian soul sucking mummy in a nursing home. Got to be a camp, slapstick comedy right? Wrong. What you actually get is a quirky mystery/horror/comedy that plays it pretty straight and what must be the greatest performance of Campbell's career. This is as much a study of a man's regrets when faced with his own mortality and a comment on how modern society treats the elderly as it is anything else.

A case where the sum of its parts doesn’t equal the whole – Coscarelli seems uncertain as to which side of his wacky premise he wants to develop, delivering a not particularly scary horror movie (though the cockroaches are things of nightmares) and satiric jabs at the personas of Elvis and JFK that don’t land because little is done to utilise them; if you can merely accept this as Campbell and Davis (both excellent) in “GRUMPY OLD MEN” with zombies, then it’s a more than passable diversion.

Bruce Campbell's elderly Elvis is great. The whole plot is one totally batshit crazy notion. So, one has to give credit to the screenwriter-director for such a loco & entertaining idea. The execution is, however, far from flawless & at times the resultant film drags. Glad to have seen it - Yes. Plan to see it again - No. Saw it totally sober; Ur preferred intoxicant would probably greatly enhance enjoyment of the bizarrely humorous concept & increase ur tolerance of the flaws & slower sections

This seems like an unpopular opinion, but you should only watch this for Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis. The two leads are absolutely fantastic and I will stand behind that; it's just that the rest of the movie feels lackluster. Behind an amazing premise is a lot of jokes that aren't as funny as they hoped to be, and some mediocre storytelling. Really, only come for the fun practical effects and the cast. The rest can easily be thrown away, unfortunately.

I love Bruce Campbell. I love Ossie Davis. And both of them give good performances here. But I doubt there is an actor alive who could have made me care about what was going on in this film. Yes, the premise is creative but it feels like writers and/or director didn't quite know what to do with it. The crude humor does not help. At all. I basically spent the second half thinking of other things that I should be doing with my time.

The concept here is great, so why am I so meh about the actual movie? The thing is, it's a movie about old Elvis and black JFK fighting a mummy in an East Texas rest home... that's played extremely low-key for half its running time. Combine that with a couple of unfunny running jokes and a few moments that seem like they're leading up to something but never do. I certainly don't mind getting into Old Elvis's head, but it felt far too much like actually *being* in a house of slow decrepitude.

Elvis isn't really dead... he lives in a nursing home. With JFK. Who is black. And they have to fight a mummy that comes to suck the souls out of their fellow nursing home patients. Bruce Campbell gives a flippin SWEET performance as the hobbling, wobbling, washed-up Elvis, who actually swapped places with an Elvis impersonator right before he died. Ossie Davis is JFK (or at least he thinks he is) and is a laugh riot! This movie is great beyond words!

A geriatric Elvis Presley and a black JFK on a wheelchair versus an Egyptian cowboy mummy? Hell yeah! Cue the man, the myth, the legend, Bruce Campbell, as well as great lines of dialogue, a fun backstory and some surprisingly mournful reflections on infirmity, old age, the trappings of fame, abandonment, death and what one leaves behind, and "Bubba Ho-Tep" is proven an arresting watch. A little less narration and a little more suspense and horror would have helped it reach its full potential.

Bubba Ho-Tep is a fascinating concept to me in terms of how it covers the insecurity of old age paired with delusions of self-identity. With Campbell's character, the direction they take this is satisfactory enough, especially the stylish monologuing. However, the rest of the movie comes across as extraneous at times and the supporting cast was super weak. The focus on the narrative is a bit jumbled too, where it doesn't hit any high notes beyond its leads characterization.

I liked the premise, but the execution was really awkward. They tried to hit a kind of middle ground between schlock and serious-ness, and it just didn't work for me. It could have been played completely straight, and the absurdity of the situation would have been funny enough, or it could have gone over the top with a lot more action and killing, and either way would be better than what we ended up with. Generally there was way too much exposition. Everything gets explained, then over-explained

An instant cult classic upon release, Bubba Ho-tep, even with its absurd comic tone, is a surprisingly rich meditation on old age, fame, legacy, and identity. There's a certain fragility in the air when Elvis recounts his tale of renounced fame to his dead roommate's attractive daughter, later taken to its crest, simultaneously tragic and comic, when his nurse accosts Presley for indulging too far into his alleged delusions. It's subtle scenes like this that offset the camp into cult ingenuity.

Well, if I'm going to praise one thing about this film, it has to be its originality. However, when all was said and done, I just didn't actually enjoy it that much. This is such a strange but lovable movie, and I think what really holds it together, in spite of its premise, is the acting put forward by the two leads, particularly Bruce Campbell. One can't be certain if he's just a senile old man who genuinely BELIEVES he's Elvis -- hidden away for years after switching places with an impersonator so he could escape his life -- or if he truly is the King, growing old and trying to give his existence meaning again. Well before the end you want to believe him.
