Anti-romanticism stretched beyond realism and into a grotesque parody of reality. Both very funny and very ugly. The plot doesn't really begin until the final 30 minutes or so, but that doesn't matter, because the characters are so wonderful that just watching them doing their stuff is great.

Dickens but grotesque. After neorealism come the farce. This kind of suburbs has survived in Rome until the '80s, and Scola overturn the classic depictions made by italian reporters, that tried to inspire compassion for the inhabitants. It's also a good picture of the conflict between old generations - that pretend to maintain a dominant position - and new generations - thinking that they have the right to be helped in their goals; but in the same time sons, sadly, grow like their fathers.

Scola takes Italian social realist comedy to its logical extremes in this landmark film about an ensemble of iconic shanty dwellers. It is so farcical and grotesque at times it made me think of Waters' "Desperate Living", and there is laughter to be had, except that the realist underpinnings, a backdrop that works on an almost subliminal level, are unbearably bleak. The final image for instance is a powerful, multi-leveled symbol of the total hopelessness of lumpenproletariat existence.

Roma'nın varoşlarından mahkum edildikleri hayata isyan edecekleri yerde, özel mülkiyet aşkına kendi kendini yok eden aile bireylerinin grotesk bir portresi. Scola'nın çok fazla filmini izlemedim ama büyük ölçekli filmleri kontrol etmedeki başarısı takdir edilesi.

I guess a lot of this stuff was super outrageous for 1976 Italy but after years of internet it's just lame

Hilariously revolting, or disgustingly brilliant.

Pretty funny and gross. I'd have liked to see some more contrast with the touristy view of Rome, maybe with the girls' maid jobs. Fav scene: sticking all the kids in the pen as daycare.
