Queen Latifah is funny. That's about the nicest I can say.

Yes, I saw saw this on purpose. I guess after that terrible taxi movie, Queen Latifah has forever sassed her way into my heart, yet not enough to compel me towards the barber shop movies. Anyway, this movie had its funny moments, that is if you are white and find yourself mystified and discomfited by the antics of wacky, but soulful black folks.

Thanks to Steve, it's not as terrible as you'd think. It's still a major step down for him, though.

Dispiritingly flat, inert comedy throws multiple powerhouses at a clunky, tasteless screenplay and finds them all floundering – Martin, Latifah and Levy should have been able to enliven this by their very presences, but are bogged down by Shankman’s curiously lead-footed direction and a tendency to snuff out the punchlines (we look headed for a terrific laxative gag, but it just sort of (heh) fizzes out). Sole highlight is Plowright; her trip to the bar at the end is obvious but still amusing.

Last film I watched in 2016. It's been a few weeks now and I've forgotten almost everything about it. I didn't hate it, but it's exactly the kind of silly-bad you'd expect from something like this, only with a weirdly roundabout romance angle.

The cast brings everything to this movie. The racial stereotypes feel too obvious & on the nose to be super funny now, the comedy is really dated at this point, and not for SJW outrage reasons so much as how, ie, George Lopez’s schtick is tired. It’s just too basic. But 30 for the cast, and for how funny it was to me as a kid when I first watched it & it still felt semi-relevant. Whether or not that feeling is real, I can’t say, maybe it’s just autism talking. 🤷♀️ It’s a good natured flick.

Shankman has done before mediocre movies which still score well in box office. This movie is racist and has some thematic jokes. There are many people in audience who could be offended by that. Luckily movie has some style.

Unfortunately, although the cast does well, they are unable to save a movie that's reliant on overly offensive jokes based on racial stereotypes.

I cannot recall when I did see this flick for the first time, but here's thoughts from reviewing: I like generally Steve Martin's face. It's alive and mostly good comedy. Latifah's got attitude, but this kind of comedy fited not to her (to tell the truth, I do not remember any good movie from her). Actually the script was pretty dull in big scale, including only some good Steve Martin screenings. For me the slave jokes were lame and aged.

Steve martin - claver as always. Donna Edwards manages to believably cycle through every known black movie stereotype in her satirical character, working well off of Martin. Much to love, funny.

Watching this movie made me feel insulted. The insinuation that Queen Latifah's character was unattractive (presumably because she's zaftig) appalled me, as well as the suggestion that it is totally outrageous for a black woman to date a white man. Comedy gold? Uh, no.

I kept getting the feeling that the film didn't know what it wanted to be. Way too much of the story relies on Queen Latifah acting stereotypically black, which is sad since she's much more talented than that.
