Brimstone and Treacle is a modern gothic tale about the evil that men do and the price that must be paid to make things right. The film, a remake of a 1976 teleplay that included Denholm Elliot in its original cast as Mr. Bates, the film also included an incredibly cool soundtrack of songs by artists like The Go-Go's, The Police, Squeeze and an irreverently stylish 1930's little diddy called "Spread A Little Happiness", performed by Sting by himself. (Rating/review for original Dennis Potter Play for Today) A dark and disturbing take on the Devil personified; the film follows his efforts to insidiously insert himself into the lives of a family torn apart by their daughter's brain damage in a car crash. It's a difficult watch and Kitchen's lead performance is impressively menacing. A few unnecessary dated effects and on-the-nose fourth-wall poetry detract from the atmosphere, but overall this holds up quite well, suitably creepy and upsetting

A bizarre, well-acted comedy-drama. Sting proves himself an actor of considerable virtuosity.
