I was more confused about the rules than I should have been. Pryor carries the frantic movie with a benched John Candy, but the plot was convoluted, especially the turn of the boyfriend who was idealistic but then wanted to be partner? Political joke: if Pryor wanted to flush $30 million in 30 days in 1985, he should have just let Donald Trump manage it. Fav scene: when they're playing baseball initially and a train runs through the outfield. Is it a real ballpark?

Brewster's Millions is a film that is propped up by it's leads and nothing else. Prior and Candy are both charming and funny (at times). The storytelling is bad at best, the message is muddled to the point of not existing, and the film-making it nothing outside of competent.

Dumb and predictable, but far too much fun to remotely dislike. Richard Pryor is on appropriately insane form.

For a comedy starring Pryor and Candy, the laughs are way too few and far between. Tack on an utterly predictable plot, and you have a mediocre 80's flick.

A couple of funny moments here and there don't make a good film. The entire premise is just utterly ridiculous but you could let that go if it was a good laugh a minute comedy. Sadly it's not and the laughs are not nearly rapid enough to make this worthwhile.

Good fun comedy caper, but not exactly the finest piece of cinema you'll ever see. Also has a horribly shmaltzy ending that takes about 10 points off for me.

A really neat concept that ends up being a lot of fun. I can't say I loved it, but I do wish comedies today were as creative. Although the forced romantic tension creates a little tedium, the movie keeps moving and hits all the right notes. Good family flick.

Not as bad as the worst of Pryor and Candy's 80s offerings, but still dull and anodyne - both men are brilliant talents, and Pryor in particular shows up to play, but they are defeated by a lumbering screenplay that can’t decide if it wants to go full goofball (my preference) or attempt a harder, politically satiric edge (the political campaign segment is painfully monotonous). A shame, because there’s (almost) enough warm and fuzzies seeing the stars together to make the film worthwhile.

It has its charming screwball moments, but if you happen to have seen the 1945 film, this will look just silly half-baked. The true good thing here is that it made some money to Hill back in the day.

This is 80's screwball comedy in its purest form, and though the outlandish premise doesn't add up in places I still had fun with it. Pryor, Candy, & the rest of the cast are what make this worth seeing, but there's a fair bit of humor & the plot- while predictable, for sure- isn't bad for what it is. I'm honestly not sure why this gets a bad rap, because though the pacing is off in parts & the characters aren't much, it's a fun time if taken for the utter slice of silly that it is.

While it's not particularly funny, nor is Richard Pryor particularly good or even likable, the film is clever at times and even provides some commentary on the income disparity as well as how the rich seemingly have no way to fail, as evidenced by Pryor trying to lose yet still making money. It has every bad 80s comedy trope, right down to the over-the-top bar fight, but it's not the worst thing I've seen this week

Ordinary high concept comedy doesn't really exploit its premise satisfactorily, mostly because Hill was not the right man for the job and the writing is decidedly average. Pryor was well cast, but he couldn't do much with this script, and Candy just falls in line. There are some laughs, but Hill struggles to maintain any real comic momentum, and it ends on a rather duff note.

You'd think the premise would be ripe for comedic pickin' but it's mostly just Brewster exuding stress and hiring people for absurd salaries, and the jokes thrown in on top of that are next to none (Candy's disappointingly underutilized). Had the potential to say something thoughtful about money, but didn't bother with that either, instead putting energy towards developing a lifeless romance. Pryor has a certain charismatic presence as the lead but it's not enough to make an engaging comedy.

This is one of those films that I enjoyed watching as a kid. The script is nothing spectacular but it works. Both Richard Pryor and John Candy are very good in this film. There are some laughs and plenty of entertaining scenes. Overall I would recommend this film.

Not especially daring, but still fairly empowering. Richard Pryor was pretty much always the heroic little guy by default, same goes for John Candy as the blue collar snarkist-- and this film certainly breaks no new ground for those archetypes, but they're great at those archetypes, and who can complain about somebody doing something they're great at, whether it's the first time or millionth time.

A comedy that wavers a little too much. There are some really funny lines and parts but overall it's underwhelming considering how funny both Pryor and Candy are in other movies. The concept itself is decent enough and it does keep you entertained throughout, but the ending sells out (in typical 80s comedy fashion) and at the end it just feels like it's potential was greater than the end product.

another one of my early teen films that i must have watched 100 times. i probably cannot give this an honest review bc of that, but i'd still watch it if i ran across it on tv. pryor had clearly lost a step by this time, but he still manages some laughs with his exasperations and john candy is always john candy

A rather silly stupid movie that's only held together by Prior's manic energy. There are some good moments, especially in the last 3rd of the movie, but much of it is still incredibly amateurish.

This story has been knocking around Hollywood forever. Even Fatty Arbuckle played Monte. But in this retelling, Richard Pryor gives a good, but vanilla performance as he millionaire with a secret. John Candy is great as Monte's buddy, Spike. Don't look for Pryor's patented racial humor here though. Overall a pleasant film.
