Brewster is an owlish, intellectual boy who lives in a fallout shelter of the Houston Astrodome. He has a dream: to take flight within the confines of the stadium. Brewster tells those he trusts of his dream, but displays a unique way of treating others who do not fit within his plans. When the fateful day arrives, and he enters the dome with his fanciful construction of bird wings, Brewster is surrounded by the police. Will he be caught before he attempts to fly? (imdb)

"After I saw this film when I was a kid, I went hang-gliding with my next door neighbor and we crashed into an abandoned missile silo. My neighbor lost his right leg. This movie was a big influence on that." —Harmony Korine.

Brewster is Altman's most offbeat film that actively resists interpretation. The bird symbolism seems obvious at first then becomes more cryptic as the film progresses, and the downbeat ending may suggest a cautionary tale inspired by the myth of Icarus or it might just be a critique of American conformity. It's a wonderful flight of fancy with dark overtones nonetheless, and the film itself is a breezy ride through oddball Americana, which Altman treats with a mix of affection and bemusement.

Higly enjoyable (also quite crazy) fun, directed in a intelligent and focused way, by the great Robert Altman. I love the characters, the humour and warmth - even though there is something wicked and dark in the second layer. This film is so cozy, I almost want to live in it.

Robert Altman in his best and his most madest. Story is far away from perfect, but that is thing that makes this oldie a must to see. Lots of birds around the main character, some real, some maybe invented. Countless small details builds up an unique storytelling and world of its own. Life of birds is one helluva circus.

Shelley Duvall, with her incredible lashes, talking about diarrhea at Bud Cort is the zany attitude that Altman infuses in this bizarre film.

One of Robert Altman's lesser-known films and I can only assume after seeing it now, it's because it's far too strange for mass consumption as it is also one of his finest.

I will say this is one of the strangest movies I've ever seen, but I really enjoyed it. A young man living at the Astrodome is building a pair of wings to fly away. Nuts right?! Somehow it makes sense.

It seems to me that the film was supposed to be some sort of satire, but I didn't see anything like that here. It certainly wasn't the humor that caused any reactions. Nice premise and couple of interesting scenes, but it's not enough.

Really funny but uneven. The plot summary doesn't do the chaotic insanity justice. While Brewster is the namesake of the film, it's all the surrounding lunacy that brings the humour together. When it hits, it's hilarious. When it doesn't, it's still bizarre enough to hold your attention. It may not be among Altman's best, but it is his strangest.

Part offbeat comedy, part murder mystery, Brewster McCloud is a wonderfully odd little movie. Barring that bummer of an ending, one of Altman's most purely enjoyable movies, even if it's kind of dark under the surface. I love Bud Cort.

This odd, rambling film is gloriously, characteristically Altman. More original than "Mash," it can be seen as a first sketch of "Nashville" in the way it uses an obsession, a crime and a southern city to explore the nature of the U.S.A. in the later part of the 20th century. Bud Cort gives this film a special sweetness, and Kellerman and Duvall have never been better, but my favorite parts are the small, strange characters created by Auberjonois, Margaret Hamilton and Stacey Keach.

Weird film with a lot of bird analogies and symbols.

Altman's first film after _M*A*S*H_, this odd fantasy/black comedy grows on you as it goes along with Margaret Hamilton in a funny Wizard of Oz in-joke and a downbeat ending they'd never go with today.

Very unique movie. It's pretty weird but not for the sake of being weird. Loved the ending & Shelley Duvall.
