Hi, I have access to the original which I’ve never seen and decided instead to press play on the 80s remake. Gere hangs dong lol. The ending rules. There’s a part where Gere tries to get the girl to show him her toes and of course this is one of those Tarantino’s favourite movies.

I can not believe how manic Richard Gere is in this. I've never seen a comparable role from him. I had never seen his junk either, but that's Richie for you. To suggest that Tarantino liked this is to note that Denis Leary looked up to Bill Hicks (horrific secret confession: I prefer Denis Leary).

Painful to get through, but the fact that Quentin Tarantino has cited this as one of his favorites actually goes a long way toward explaining the bizarre misreading of Godard that forms the basis of his sensibility.

One trying too hard would take this over the Godard movie but that’s not to say this isn’t good time. You can definitely get where QT gets his deranged Godard impressions from. It’s Godard run thru the 70’s American genre cogs. It’s the American cinematic jukebox exploding in the city where everything is easily disposed. Everything a reproduction of something we once thought innovative. Where the history of cinema matters as much as the American Dream. ALL OR NOTHING BABY!!

A lesser version of True Romance. Purely a guy movie that's probably a guilty pleasure for some but a lot of fun and does elicit a feeling out of you, which is more than you get out of most films. Richard Gere doesn't quite pull off what Christian Slater does in True Romance, though, and it takes you out of it in the beginning

Surprisingly decent remake of Godard's À bout de souffle (perhaps I would talk differently if I had seen the original). But what really caught me unprepared was Gere almost pulling off a cool, nihilistic rock'n'roller. Almost. The plot is a classic story about a couple on the run from the law. I never heard of Valérie Kaprisky before, but she's quite good as a chick with french accent who gets naked a lot. Stylish cinematography.

When it's not going so over-the-top that you're laughing at it, it's pretty good. Relentlessly stylized and horny, with superb use of L.A. locales.

Gere acts insufferable for a large part of this. I guess what I found interesting though was the wild roaming around the city, playing more or less games of cat and mouse with the police. It's huge, there are people everywhere, so much to see even if a lot of it is not pretty. Seems like you could just aimlessly run around forever out there

Oddly I dig this, just not as much as the original classic. Nice modern (for the time anyways) update, Richard Gere steals every scene he's in.

Interesting as a moronic respinning of Godard. Greasy 80s fun. Kind of dull.

A very '80's remake of a movie that did not particularly need remaking.

It does do what every good remake does; making this remake his own thing. Through infusing it with rockability and the L.A. setting JM makes it again an American movie, but one that's clearly inspired by the Nouvelle vague in its playfulness with style with its use of rock 'n roll soundtrack, cool styling and reference to pop culture. Standout moment is when Gere helps himself out of an emotional meltdown by signing Suspicious Minds. Which turns out to be a predecessor for the fabulous ending.

More fun than the original and you can definitely see how it influenced Tarantino, but a lot of it is still fairly retarded.

RARBG.
